Philips has unveiled its latest AV range at a press conference in Auckland, which includes the AmBX gaming peripherals, Swarovski accessories and one of the cheapest, large-screen LCDs yet.

AmBX

The "New Zealand's Next Top Model" event was filled with drag queens, body-popping B-boys, a whole lot of karate -- and plenty of poor acting. One of the highlights, though, was the room-sized (and fully functional) AmBX system.

AmBX takes the Ambilight system from Philips' range of flat-screens and applies it to gaming. In addition to flashing lights, the system incorporates fans to simulate wind effects, and add further "oomph" to explosions. Philips representatives told us that a whole range of interactive effects were trialled in the development of the AmBX system -- including electric shocks! Pricing of the system is yet to be announced, but the full system will retail for NZ$999 over the ditch.

Philips also announced it will concentrate on LCD screens in the future, as the company sees it as the largest growth area. To complement this, the company announced several new LCD TVs at the event, which include its first 52-inch LCD screen. It's named the 52PFL7432 (in New Zealand) and is expected to include a digital tuner onboard and retail for around AU$5999.

Also, be on the lookout for a "top secret" TV, which, we have been told, will be "Ambilight to the extreme". Electric shocks anyone?

For the lady in your life, why not try one of the Swarovski USB pendants, or even a set of earphones? The USB key pendants will come shaped as either a heart or a padlock, and will be available at Swarovski stores and retailers including David Jones.

In addition, the company announced several new sound systems, including a luxury DVD mini-system with HDMI and a valve pre-amp -- it's expected to retail for around AU$1,100.

Ty Pendlebury travelled to Auckland as a guest of Philips.

      Bose mobile on-ear headset

The sound quality and build of the Bose mobile on-ear headset is great but the premium you'll pay for the microphone attachment is daylight robbery.

Sony MDR-NC500D Digital Noise Cancelling Headphones

The Sony MDR-NC500D Digital Noise Cancelling Headphones may lighten the wallet, but they are a great option for frequent fliers and tetchy commuters who need superior noise cancellation.

      Klipsch Image X5 headphones

The Klipsch Image X5 earphones are a bit of an investment, but they're worth it if you demand excellent audio quality and have had trouble with ear bud fit in the past.

      Sennheiser MM 50 for iPhone

Compared to the headphones bundled with Apple's iPhone 3G the MM 50s are light years ahead. Exceptional sounding bass and its affordable price tag make the MM 50 a great choice for replacing those dodgy Apple ear buds.

      Philips SHE9850 sound-isolating earphones

An excellent all-rounder, with good detail, a balanced, warm sound and superb comfort and fit. Deeper bass and brighter treble exists in competing models, but for almost all genres of music and in most listening environments, the SHE9850s will impress and for a good price.
