The flash advantage

I just read that Apple has come out with a flash version of the iPod. But what advantages, if any, does flash have over a similar hard drive MP3 player?
It looks like the current batch of flash players can only hold small amounts of music. Is it even possible to make a flash drive the size of, say, the current 20GB hard drive from Apple?-- Submitted by: Eric

Flash-based players are smaller and less prone to damage, thanks in part to solid-state memory, and therefore make perfect exercise or day-trip companions. While flash-based players cost much more per megabyte than a hard drive-based player does, their prices are still more approachable.
Flash-based players max out at 1GB, and for good reason: solid-state memory is expensive, and most consumers would prefer a similarly priced microdrive-type player with five times the capacity. By the way, you can store about 250 songs on a 1GB player--not a bad number for most.
