While the absence of a dedicated volume control is a minor flaw, the iPod is one of the world's easiest players to use, thanks in part to the Click Wheel. It also benefits from its seamless relationship with iTunes. We've gathered a bunch of MP3 players that are not complicated, and some of them even include handy extras such as built-in FM tuners.
For example, take the SanDisk Sansa e200 series, which features a simple, icon-driven main menu and pared-back design. Then there's the Samsung YP-T9, which is not only beautiful and great-sounding but a joy to use with its animated menus and intuitive five-way control pad. The Creative Zen V Plus definitely deserves a shout-out, as it sports an awesome interface, a boatload of features, and handy contextual menus. Then there's the simple-as-pie Archos Gmini 104. Sure, it's a bit behind the times, but it couldn't be easier to use. Finally, Sony's NW-A1200 with its basic interface -- and singular mission to play back digital audio files -- is second only to the iPod when it comes to intuitive hard-drive-based players. Now if only Sony would address that pesky SonicStage issue. No doubt the new iPod Shuffle will be a snap to use, thanks to its ultrasimple design, but this elusive little player just missed the deadline for inclusion in this round.
Apple iPod Nano (2nd generation, 8GB)The second-generation Apple iPod Nano is like the successful offspring of an iPod Mini and a first-generation iPod Nano. It's small, stylish, user-friendly, and competitively priced -- a great player all around and suitable for a variety of users.
SanDisk Sansa e280 (8GB)With a huge features list, simple design and a whole lot of expandable storage space, the Sansa e280 screams "Take me on, wimpy iPod Nano".
Samsung YP-T9The Samsung YP-T9 is a no-brainer: it's easy to use, packed with features, and sounds fantastic.
Archos Gmini 104If what you're after is a really basic, simple, and cheap MP3 player, the Gmini 104 is a fine choice. People who want up-to-date technology, however, should look elsewhere.
Creative Zen V Plus (4GB)The Creative Zen V Plus is a superb choice for anyone looking for a compact and feature-filled flash MP3 player with great sound quality. If you're looking for a more sophisticated design (or have large thumbs), check out the iRiver Clix instead
