Apple iPod (updated fifth generation, 80GB) User reviews

By James Kim on 13/09/2006

More Apple reviews , RRP: AU$499.00

The good:

  • Improved video battery life and brighter screen
  • Brings gapless playback to the masses
  • New features such as instant search and enhanced games
  • Excellent overall value

The bad:

  • No major new functions such as FM radio, wireless, recording
  • Small screen not conducive to video viewing
  • Proprietary USB cable
  • Narrow native video-format compatibility
  • Body is still scratch prone

The bottomline:

The amazingly low priced updated Apple iPod gets many under-the-hood improvements, but it's still not a true video player.

8.3/10

This iPod is really good... The new improvements already mentioned above certainly adds to the value. I write more cons than pros but it is still very good.

Pros: Sleek and sexy. Very thin. Gapless playback amongst the changes is the best along with the battery life.

Cons: Proprietry software sucks, Windows Media Player 11 is far superior to iTunes. It supports barely any video formats, so you will need to download programs to convert your current movies (if you dont use the iTunes store). As usual there is hardly any accessories. No manual, cmon we arnt geniouses (see I cant even spell it)

i bought a 30gb one the other day and i am very plaesed with it i also got an extended warranty to be safe and a case to protect it from scratches. I was trying to decide between the ipod, creative zvm and toshiba gigabeat
the ipod had better battery life and a slimmer design (which i need cuz i carry it in my shirt pocket most of the time), the ipod is also more common so there is more 3rd party accesories and more info about it if you have any questions feel free to ask me .

i would have given it a ten if it came with more accesories and was scratch proof

Pros: slim design, price, battery life, everything else

Cons: no power adaptor

I just bought my first iPod 80Gb. Not being familiar with the machines capabilities, I would like a user manual. There were none available!

Pros: Great sound!

Cons: How do I get to know the capabilities of the unit, without a user manual?

The reviewer said $380 for this 30GB Video iPod... I got it for $310. Had no problems with it so far.
I'm using it with the Belkin TuneCommand AV and TuneDock. With a little effort I can install Linux on it, so I can boot either the normal software or Linux (which gives me audio recording, and lots of other functions at ZERO additional cost) I can also use at as a portable hard drive to transfer data files and even offload images from my digital camera. Can't do that with any other so called "mp3 player"... This is capable of SO much more than other products.

Will be the Best Christmas Present this year due to its appealing price 380 for 30gb and 499 for 80gb

Pros: Brighter Screen, but more vid life, search function and games

Cons: Battery life, Lack of video support.
