2007 was the year in which the line between "portable video player" and "MP3 player" got even more blurry. As flash capacities increased, screens got brighter and battery lives got longer, video capabilities became a standard inclusion on spec lists.

Apple may have dominated the headlines with its tactile iPod Touch, but 2007 saw plenty of other contenders for your cash in the portable video stakes. Archos, Creative, iRiver and Sony all came through with solid players.

Our list of top devices for the year caters to the video fiend as well as the casual watcher. Those who love their MPEG-4s on the move will likely lean toward high-capacity models such as Archos' 605, while music lovers with a penchant for the odd video clip will find that the more compact iRiver X20 or Sony NW-A806 suits them better. The newly released Creative Zen deserves your consideration thanks to its bright screen, compact size and up to 16GB of expandable storage space. And yes, ultimately we can't deny its allure -- the iPod Touch should be on your shortlist, if only for its strokability.
