Navman MY55T

By Derek Fung on 29 June 2009

Just like the 4.7-inch MY50T, but with added goodness in the form of Bluetooth hands-free, more memory, an FM transmitter, 3D landmarks and a higher capacity battery.

    • Good: screen size, spoken streat names
    • Bad: location of the menu button

Good unit but when you hold the unit, it's annoying when you keep touching the menu button.

    • Bad: Navteq needs some work

    MT55T
After four years with a Navman n40i it was time to upgrade so chose a new GPS rather than a map upgrade. My choice was the MY55T.
This not so much of a review but a comparison between the old and
the new. It turns out to be very much two steps forward and one step back. Some good features on the N40i are missing on the MY55T

    Case
    N40i Thick, 3.5" screen.
    MY55T Thin, 4.7". Brighter, sharper
    Real Buttons
    N40i 8
    MY55T 1
    Touch screen
Both yes. (MY55T has touch buttons and slide)
    Windscreen mount
    N40i Bulky, difficult.
    MY55T Compact, easy to use.
    Car power cable: Both included
    Mains power pack
    N40i yes
MY55T No. Optional extra (The old one works.)
    USB cable : Both yes
    Bluetooth
    N40i no
    MY55T yes
    FM transmitter
    N40i no
MY55T yes (for car spkr audio.)
    Microphone
    N40i no
    MY55T yes
    Additional memory slot:
    N40i 2Gb (max) SD
MY55T 8Gb (max) micro-SD but cannot be accessed from the MY55T!

    Geo tagged photos (Navpix)
    N40i Built-in camera
MY55T Capture button (Almost as good).
Both models display and use geo-tagged photos.
The N40i Navpix are compatible and work on the MY55T. (Others can be downloaded from the web (eg www.flickr.com) or geo-tag cameras.)

Traffic Message Channel (TMC) Real time traffic information.
    N40i no
    MY55T yes
Connect (via mobile phone) for POI and weather information.
    N40i no
    MY55T yes
Use GPS for hands-free phone calls.
    N40i no
    MY55T yes*
*Not a lot of use for this if you have a bluetooth phone and headset.

    Media:
Photo display (thumbnails, map link, full screen slideshow, zoom):
Both yes (much better on the MY55T)
    MP3 and Video
    Both no (Big disappointment)

    PC support
    NavAlbum and NavDesk(MY55T)

    Mapping
    N40i Whereis
    MY55T Navteq

My 4-year old Whereis map had plenty of errors and so has the latest Navteq. (Our suburb alone has 8 minor and 1 major error.) When I checked the Navteq website, all but one have been corrected. The Map error reporting system is very good, so instead of complaining, report every error you find. Eventually they will get it right.

    Road delete
    N40i yes
MY55T no (I really miss this feature.)
    Road addition: Both no
    Traffic lights
    N40i no
    MY55T yes
    Speed limits
    N40i no
MY55T yes (warns if going 5km/h over)
    Red light cameras, school zones
    N40i (added later)
    MY55T Included
Black spots, Rail crossings,3D Junction views
    N40i no
    MY55T yes
    Petrol, parking
    Both yes
    Google maps, Internet info
    N40i no
    MY55T yes (via phone)

    Navigation features:
    Route options
    N40i 25
MY55T 5 (Much harder to fine tune the best option on the MY55 as they all produce very different routes.)

    GPS fix indicator
    N40i Always on screen*
    MY55T Smaller (go/no-go indicator)
(* The N40i is much more sophisticated: Can display signal strengths from every visible satellite as a bar chart.)

    Walking mode
    N40i no
    MY55T yes
    Compass
    N40i Always on screen
MY55T Not as clear (8 directions only)
    Favourites list, Recent trips
    Both yes.
    Sorting order
    Both Alpha (MY55T also Date)
    Voices (2)
    N40i English accent. Directions only
MY55T Australian accent. Directions & street names

    Menu Systems.
Very different on the two systems. I am getting the hang of the sliding option on the MY55. (It's much like my mobile phone.) One problem is: after scrolling down a long list, you have to scroll all the way back to the top to access the Return button. This is not good design. The Return button should always be accessible.
The MY55 FIND menu asks for street before city/area. Not a good idea when there can suddenly be a very long list of identical street names.

But there are additional search options not found on the old N40i.

The bottom line is I'm gettiing used to the new quirks and seeing roads I didn't know existed. Navteq are offering free upgrades until 2012.
They should have it right by then.

    • Good: Find, Suna Traffic, Routing Options, Bluetooth functions,
    • Bad: Map quality and usability of custom POIs needs some work.

    A great unit!

  • Jones gave 2/10 on 03/01/2010 10:06

    • Good: Not Much
    • Bad: Maps - Memory - Blue tooth - Window bracket - Power plug

A real Disappointment - From the mounting bracket to the power supply plug location to the maps, Blue tooth, being able to drive through 2 streets before screen changes and the maps update...

  • Rod gave 2/10 on 30/12/2009 15:26

    • Good: Screen size and layout
    • Bad: blue tooth and maps

The worst Navigator I have ever used. Third Navman I have had and I am going back to my old one. Hands free is pathetic.

  • kaozgamer gave 9/10 on 30/12/2009 12:13

    • Good: Easy to use menu, large screen, bluetooth handsfree is nice
    • Bad: poor battery life

Has everything that I want except you always have to keep this thing charging.
