With the average consumer's digital storage needs ever increasing, Netgear has released the Stora, a network-attached storage (NAS) unit for the home. While NAS's are usually restricted to the corporate level, the Stora can act as both a storage and media server to almost all computers and devices within the home.

Design and functionality

The Stora is a small, attractive piano black box with three LEDs on the front, a USB port and two cables protruding from the back (power and Ethernet) allowing it to be easily kept out of sight. It's also whisper quiet with a single fan at the top of the unit to provide ventilation.

Opening the unit proved to be a bit of a puzzle at first, with the front panel sliding up and off. But once inside, you can see two hard drive bays that fit 3.5-inch SATA drives snugly. The Stora already comes with a 1TB hard drive, but installing and removing additional ones was as simple as sliding them in and out of the bays with no screws involved.

Set-up of the Stora is done using the supplied CD and involves registering your box on the internet. The packaged software offers a plethora of functions such as restricting access via user accounts, automated backups and media server functionality which were pretty easy to use. Logging into the Stora through the web interface also allows you to create photo albums and slideshows with pictures and videos on the device or upload them to Facebook.

Additionally, Netgear offers a "premium subscription" service allowing access to the NAS from anywhere through a web interface. Impressively, we were able to log into the storage unit and access its files from home while it was connected to the office LAN, despite being behind a firewall. Similarly, you can view your pictures through Cooliris, a neat 3D image browser, or upload your photos to Flickr. These premium functions are nice and they come at the very reasonable cost of US$19.99 annually.

An unfortunate downside to all these functions is the need for an internet connection to access them, even if the Stora is connected to your local network. Changing the settings of the Stora annoyingly involves going through the internet to log into the Stora on your own network. Once set-up though, you won't need to configure the settings often. You can also access the storage space directly via Windows Explorer by using its IP address and a log-in, though you can only transfer files on and off it this way.

As previously mentioned, the Stora can act as a media server for a home network. It's DLNA compliant so it can stream media to game consoles, phones and other media devices. Accessing the Stora through a browser also allows you to stream videos using an in-built flash player or view images in a slideshow.

Performance

Writing data to the Stora through a LAN is a breeze, maintaining a transfer rate of 19MB/s to a single hard disk across a gigabit Ethernet connection. Conversely, the read speed hovered around 29MB/s. Accessing the unit through the internet was obviously slower, but load times were reasonable with log-in taking the longest time.

The Stora can also extend its storage space through USB, whether it be a hard drive or a flash device, and these devices appear as a folder within the unit's file directory. However, we did find that the Stora could not identify one of our USB flash sticks.

While the Stora has two hard drive bays, a second hard drive can only be used for disk mirroring, with the unit automatically configured to RAID 1. While this offers better data security, it comes at the cost of flexibility — simply adding another drive won't give you more space.

Despite this shortcoming, the Netgear Stora fairs well as a storage and media server for the home. It has lots of bells and whistles without too much hassle or a hefty price tag, a good choice for those who want a simple and effective storage solution.

"Good concept, but woe to you if something goes wrong!"

The Good:Centralised affordable(?) network accessible storage

The Bad:Proprietary file system format, "gotcha" warranties

The device is nice enough, and has helped me organise files that in a central location where everybody in the family can access them and have them backed up. It worked well for about 15 months, and then...

Then... well, let me tell you...

The device comes with four separate warranties - hardware, power supply, accessories, and software. The first three are for three years, the last one is for 3 months.

So when my Stora suddenly stopped working, with the power LED flashing (so the device was not booting), I tried all sorts of things to get it back, including resetting the box and every suggestion that this guy 'robys' had on his support blog.

Then I tried telephone support. Now I do NOT hack my box, so when it stopped working, I just needed someone to tell me to press a button while singing some incantation, but no such luck. Since the software warranty expired three months after the purchase date, they were after cold hard cash to get it working again.

To me, an appliance needs to work, or get replaced. If the hardware is faulty, you get it replaced. If the software fails, you should be able to get the box back up and working. To me, it's unacceptable to have it any other way. I'm going to try get this box back up again to extract the data from it, and I'm going to move to a different brand...

The Good:Not much

The Bad:Slow data transfers, inconsistent behaviour, more complex than a plug and play device should be

This product is getting old - but it's still on the market. I rarely leave reviews but this product is trully terrible. Avoid.

The Good:Worked fairly well for 1 year until my internet service router went bad. Then I lost the Stora connection and NetGear could not help me restore it.

The Bad:I agree with other comments that this is an unreliable device and too time consuming.

Once Verizon provided new router and I reestablished links to PCs, WiFi DVD, Squeezebox, just could not get Stora MS2110 back on line. I could not find a usable help phone number (past 90 day set up time), so am getting Q&A over secure website. Ask a question, day goes by, unhelpful response-REPEAT until you are ready to trash the device.

I do not recommend this device.

The Good:Looks, Quiet, Price, Better after update!

The Bad:The need for net connection, poor flexability

Prior to the update it was very painful to the point I considered doing away with it all togeather. The update enabled more flexability in the UI. Now you can even seperate the 2 drives for extra storage space. Unfortunately it comes at the cost of data security should a drive fail. I just dont understand why they needed to run them in JBOD (sudo RAID1 (Just a Bunch Of Disks "JBOD")) where both disks are partitioned as one drive.

Should you be a tight wod like me and dont want to spend up on a NAS. Give it a go. But be warned, you get what you pay for!

A little conserned about the safety of the data. I have set up a reverse backup with an external USB portable drive.

The Good:I can't see it as it's in another room

The Bad:I can't use it

I had someone else set this up for me - huge mistake, now I don't know how to use it and I can't remember my username or passowrd or find the CD that goes with it. How do I stop this being a total waste of money? I asked the IT guy to set me up so I can use MYOB symultaneously with someone else, is this even the right thing for the job? Can I copy DVDs onto it then plug it into my TV to watch via a hub thingo?

So, clearly, this product deserves 1/10 because of your ignorance. Retard

The Good:Features

The Bad:Firmware

I've had my Stora for 6 months. My primary use is for data backup and the peace of mind it provides (should provide) with RAID mirroring. I tend to keep computers until they are ready for the trash heap. That means some have drives pushing 10 years old - and I need a secure place to keep the data, because one day the drives will die.

Over the 6 months I've had the Stora, I was a very big proponent of it. It performed the functions I needed, and I didn't have any issues. As a participant on the Netgear Stora forum, I saw many, many people cursing this unit, cursing Netgear, and I really didn't see the problem...until one day last week, when I came home and the unit had gone into an error state.

To make a long story short, the thinking behind this product is very good and probably a bit ahead of its time, however, the firmware behind it is very immature. It is not a production-quality product and unfortunately, you should not feel secure thinking it is protecting your data. Do not take comfort in wonderful feel-good terms like RAID just because they slap it on the box.

The Good:Nothing

The Bad:Noisy, need to pay money to use it after upgrade,

I've used the Stora for a while. It got stuck a little after the free 90 days support period, I used a hard reset procedure(described on the Netgear forums), now the device is asking for a new key which netgear avoids providing without me having to pay $85 for premium support.

Please stay away from this product to save yourself the time and hassle. Never buy a stora device.

I will try to get my money back.
