NETGEAR Storage Central Turbo SC101T
By on 10 July 2007
Netgear's NAS offering would be a whole lot better if it actually acted as a NAS. As it stands, it's no better than a crippled external hard drive.

- Good: Exceeded Expectations in Speed and multi file support
- Bad: Noisy and remote computer setup takes a little bit of time
I have been extrememly satisfied. We opened the same movie loaded as an MPEG, what I have noted it really comes down to what drive you use, I used som e different drives, but once I installed My Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 1Tb drive, the Unit was a perfect match. I use it from teh ethernet and share throughout my house, we can all watch the same movie at the same time starting at different times with no Jitter. I would recemmend this product with the seagate drive of course to anyone

- Good: Could be installed
- Bad: No support for Linux, MAC or any standard protocol
Installed great once WinXP, but it made Windows go slower (additional network traffic, drops connections). Tried to uninstall -> Ended up with having to reinstall Windows. It messed up the harddrive detection etc... I would never use or install it again.

- Good: Easy to set up,
- Bad: Drops Constantly the mirror. No static IP
If I knew that I would have these problems with this "product"
I wouldn't have bought it.
Bought i primarily for use i a mirror.
Everytime my router needed a restart (this is not happening often) the Mirror didn't work because the IP Become a different IP than i had before ( this even when All other units on the network had static IP's) -

- Bad: still taking up shelf space in the stores

This is not a product, this is a rubbish! -

- Good: Provides extended storage when it works.
- Bad: Limited functionality
Proprietary file system defies recovery when things go bad.
Drives can not be read by Linux or Windows systems without the storage central software.
No recovery tools included with package.
Drive letters change on every start up.
Obviously only as fast as the drive that you are copying from/to
Very unhappy customer here.
It Might be cheaper to build a SATA system on a cheap motherboard with minimal memory and network it..I'll be looking in to this alternative.
NetGear has lost one customer, and countless others I will be warning to avoid this solution. -

Very slow, extremely slow that you'd rather use a cheaper enclosure

It does support JBOD/RAID-0 like function, just select that you want to "add capacity" to a partition and you can span it over one or several harddrives (even over several SC101T's)
