Netgear WGT634U

Wireless routers are nothing new under the sun, but with an innovative feature set aimed at sharing media and other files over a wireless network connection, this particular offering shines bright.

Wifi Works fine but the rest sucks
The connection works correctly but when tried to upgrade the router from the router config, it just displays: PAGE CANNOT BE DISPLAYED. Contacted the Netgear support and got an Indian bloke on the phone. He asked me to go to the router config, router upgrade, browse the file and press upgrade. Result: the page cannot be displayed when press upgrade. The question i was asked afterward was: Is your pc connected to the router? Very logic, isnt it?
The USB port for usb device has got a very slow access time. So it is useless. -

BAD WIRELESS PERFORMANCE
We purchased two units for separate locations. Both units exhibited the same issues after a period of operation. Namely, wireless connections fell off until the unit was rebooted by disconnecting its power. Maybe five to 60 minutes following the reset, the connection would then fall off again. Intermittently the signal would return from the router, however it would be unstable. Simply, the wireless feature is not reliable for either home or business applications.
A proven preference to this item is the Linksys WRT54G, and verified with the Centrino Mobile Technology. Excellent alternative in our case with 54Mbps speed only though. -

Setup Sucks
The setup isn't easy to do over the phone so it's no good. Also no help online.... NetGear needs to put tutorials on their site on how to set up all of their routers. Serious prob.
Also what's the deal with their customer support having people set up an encryption for wireless connection but not explain how to set up their laptop to connect to an encrypted router?
I'm great with routers and networking and if I can't find out how to use this router in less than 5 minutes online, it's not any good.
I say go with Linksys. Easy to install, easy to setup and great wireless signal coverage with just as much security settings with NO STUPID WIZARD!!!
Bottom line... Go with Linksys -

Don't buy
The range is very limited. The signal strength varies tremendously over a very short period of time (even in the same room as the router).
I've used three different software packages with it to try and improve performance. It has real trouble obtaining an IP address. -

no signal strength
Works ok in room with router, but signal will barely go 2 rooms over and no way over 30 ft.

Be warned.
DNS forwarding does not work properly although I found that you can get around this by setting the servers as static entries.. This is a serious problem.
Also dont attempt to update the firmware to 1.4.1.5 Beta as it will just cause the unit to heat up and fail.
This product will dissapear never to be seen again if these serious flaws are not addressed. -

Don't Buy It
I tried one out a couple of days ago, and was very disappointed. The router had to be rebooted every time I tried to access the USB drive via the internet. And when you reboot the router, you had to reboot your PC too in order to get internet connection.
And by the way, if you buy the router from CompUSA, they won't take it back without the 15% restocking fee. So don't buy from CompUSA either!
