in brief Apple is expected to unveil updates to its laptop line next week with the official confirmation issued overnight that it was planning a press event in the US.
The event will be held on October 14 in Cupertino, California, according to an official invite which landed in the inboxes of staff at ZDNet.com.au sister site CNET News.
Not mentioned in the invite is the most persistent rumor about the launch: that at least one of the new systems will hit a price point of US$800.

Okay, so at the current exchange rate ($1AUD = $0.66USD), $800USD is about $1,210AUD (minus whatever else Apple Australia whack on top) - making for a pretty unspectacular price on an entry-level laptop these days.
As chris manuel mentioned, a Windows-based unit can be had for $500AUD. -

Mac Mini is already at this price point and is well overdue for an update. Within the last week apple.com.au have removed all MacBooks and MacMini's from their Refurbished Mac store; http://store.apple.com/133-622/WebObjects/australiastore.woa/wa/RSLID?sf=wA2HYX4FYK9DXPCFF&nclm=C61AFE24
