New Canon cameras: waterproof, colourful and now with HD video
By Alexandra Savvides on 18 February 2009
It's taken a while for Canon to catch up with its compact competitors in the HD video race, and it seems the company has acquiesced on this front, announcing a range of new IXUS and PowerShot models with the much sought after functionality.

Previous to today's announcement, the PowerShot SX1 IS was the only compact model in Canon's range which featured HD video. Now, the functionality has trickled down to most of the new IXUS cameras, starting with the top of the line IXUS 990 IS.
The other notable feature in most of the new compact range is the inclusion of blink detection — a seemingly novel technology that tells you when someone in the photo has blinked, and prompts you to take the photo again. We assume the next iteration will be clever enough to automatically take another photo immediately afterwards.
Along with the upgrades to the IXUS range, is a brand new PowerShot model, the D10; Canon's first rugged camera. It's waterproof to 10 metres, beating Panasonic and Olympus at 3 metres, and is also freeze proof and shockproof. For the colour conscious, separate covers can be snapped onto the front of the body to change its appearance.
Canon also announced two new tilt-shift lenses for its range of EOS cameras: the widest angle tilt-shift available, the TS-E17mm f/4L, and a 24mm TS-E24mm f/3.5L II.
Below is the complete list of new Canon compact models available in Australia from March 2009. Expect previews and reviews soon.

It's a shame that the HD video is recorded as .mov (H.264 video PCM audio). Canon should have chosen .mp4 (H.264 AAC) which is an industry standard these days and is also supported by Adobe Flash.
