With the 6.1 megapixel D70s, Nikon makes some incremental improvements to its popular consumer digital SLR, the D70. It is set to take on rivals such as the Olympus E-300 and Pentax *ist D.

Upside: The original D70 remains an excellent camera that got high marks from us. Nikon has updated it with a larger 2-inch LCD and an improved menu system, as well as more custom settings, a remote control and compatibility with the PictBridge direct-printing standard. Nikon also claims performance improvements in its autofocus system as well as its continuous-shooting speeds. With a high-speed CompactFlash card, you can capture a burst of 144 JPEG images at a rate that Nikon clocks at 3fps.

Downside: This is not a major upgrade, and the D70s's resolution isn't the highest in its class. Advanced photographers will have to purchase Nikon's Capture 4.0 raw-file processing software separately, although the company does include PictureProject, a more mainstream image-editing, -organising and -sharing program.

Outlook: The D70s will be available in May 2005 in packages that Nikon is dubbing the Outfit and the Set. The Outfit includes the camera body, a rechargeable battery and charger, the PictureProject software and Nikon's new AF-S DX Nikkor 18-to-70mm f/3.5-to-f/4.5G IF-ED lens. The Set gives you everything but the lens.

    • Good: Solid image quality.
      Attractive design.
      Excellent video specs.
    • Bad: No raw capture feature.

I am a professional photographer. This camera is great in my all carrier i think. Because of its great features like solid image quality, excellent image quality for an inexpensive camera, attractive design and excellent video specs.

    • Good: great pictures (blue sky looks blue, which is not true for all cameras...)
allows fully automatic or fully manual settings
      good battery
    • Bad: Big ! Heavy !
The memory card slot is where the thumb grips the camera so it gets tired and the lock might get disturbed after some time

Great camera but some things to improve

More than sufficient for oscasional photographer like me

Having had Nikon FE for many years, and now Nikon D70 for 1 year, one thing is certain, I have become a lazy photographer. The automatic settings are good enough to take decent pictures in most situations, so no need to excert myself if I don't want to. The body, even though plastic, feels solid and chunky, without the weight. The plastic lens that came with the camera however,is flimsy with a lot of movement in the front ring . Nikon may have a reputation for excellent optics, but in a flimsy enclosure like this, it's a real let down. The pop up flash would be better with manual override to disable it if underexposure is desired. The auto focus works very well and rarely gets it wrong.

    Great camera with greeat facilities

I have just bought a D70s which is my first digital SLR. Previous to this I took slide film using a Pentax Z1 so moving away from Penatx was a big decision. The choice came down to the Nikon D70, D70s, D50 Canon Eos350 and D20. I chose the Nikon as the overall feel and funstions were better than the 350 although it had a lower speed. The kit also comes with a much better lens. I chose the D70s over the D70 even though there's a new version of the firmware for the D70 because if you shop around you can take 20% off the price of the D70s so it gets much closer to the price of the D70. I chose the D70s over the eos 20D because the feel of both cameras is the same and the cost of the D20 with a good lens is far more than the D70s. I have no regrets in my choice. All the cameras take great pictures and even if you don't like the way they are manipulated in the camera you can fix that on your PC.
