Avatar is seen as the movie that will spearhead the uptake of 3D television, but hopes that it will come out in November have been dashed and it may not come out until 2012.

The "vanilla" 2D version of Avatar will be released in Australia on Blu-ray on 29 April and, despite director James Cameron's best efforts, it appears that the 3D version is at least a year away.

According to the LA Times, sources within Fox say that a November 2010 release date of the 3D version is "wrong" and that it will be an "ultimate" 2D version instead. It claims a third version, in 3D, is planned for sometime in the future, with website The Digital Bits predicting that it mightn't be out for several years as Fox is waiting for 3D to hit saturation point.

3D televisions will go on sale in Australia from April, but until 3D Blu-ray players and discs become available there will be no way to use them in a 3D context — of course, they will still work as normal 2D TVs.

Would you buy a 3D TV despite a potentially long wait for Avatar to come out on 3D Blu-ray? Let us know below.

I nearly bought a 3D TV when my mate bought his last December. $4000 he spent on a Samsung TV, blu ray player and special cables. He has no decent movies to watch... The rubbish that is available in 3D is not worth the money. I'm glad I saved my money, can't afford that on a pension. SATURATION won't happen until there are decent movies out there... Avatar would help.

I brought a 3D samsung TV costing $8000 about 6 months ago after being told by the sales man that 3D movies would be redally availble by X-Mas now I am being told it could be any where up wards of a year away, not saying the TV is not worth haveing its just that if I brought the TV in a years time I would be paying less than half for it. I mean already I could have purchased it for $2000 dollars less than what I payed for it.

Agree with all comments. The more 3D content the gretaer the uptake of televisions. Panasonic must have paid a sh**load of money to secure the 3D version so why cant we in the normal world get it.

Blu-Ray discs are cheaper to make than 3D televisions and so the greater availability of 3D content, the greater the demand for 3D televisions.

At the moments, the Distributors are waiting for enough 3D televisions to be purchased and the television makers and consumers are waiting for more 3D content.

It is a catch 22.

I believe that the more 3d movies that there are out there will drive the sale of 3d tv's. Avatar out in 3d will certainly drive people to get a 3d tv.

I agree with Witold comment.

there are sporting events being broadcast in 3d and they look good and will get better

as for movies .. well its a case of whats comes first .. the chicken or the egg

also the quality of 2d pics is supurb on the new 3d screens, the added hardware on the TV for 3d makes 2d look better

I have the full 3d TV and Blu-ray player and only about 6 3D DVD's on the market. I'm beginning to think I made a bad decision with the blu ray-player.
How do they think it's going to hit saturation point without any releases?
