Nokia 2310

By Frank Lewis on 29 November 2007

The 2310 may be low cost, but its features are too limited for our liking.

Design
The Nokia 2310 is a bare bones handset that offers little in the way of frills but is available for a budget price.

The 2310 is part of a wave of phones that aim to strip out what many see as the unnecessary features that have attached themselves to mobiles over the years. In the case of the 2310, what you're left with is a mobile that's got call and text features, with little else to get in the way.

The handset has a pretty standard candy-bar design, which will help it appeal to traditionalists, and the large buttons are ideal for texting.

As the phone uses a smaller than usual screen, the menu system is slightly different to that found on most Nokia phones. Instead of scrolling through the menu options vertically, the menu appears as a sort of horizontal carousel. Aesthetically it's not as pleasing as the normal Nokia menu layout, but it's not too difficult to get used to.

Features
Perhaps the only added frill is the built-in FM tuner, which can be used once you connect the supplied headphones to the mini jack at the bottom of the phone. The tuner's reception is strong and you can save your favourite stations as presets complete with names to make them easily identifiable.

The list of what you don't get on the 2310 is a good deal longer than the list of what's actually included. What's immediately obvious is that there's no camera at all, so forget about being able to take snaps of mates down the pub or the kids when they pull cute faces.

You won't find any data features here either. There's no support for GPRS and no built-in WAP or Web browser. As you would expect when GPRS is off the menu, the phone has no mail features. Also, connectivity is severely limited. Wireless communication technologies like Bluetooth and infrared are out the window and as the handset is dual band only, you won't be able to use it if you venture abroad.

Performance
The phone's reception is very good, even in areas where other handsets struggle, and the call quality was up to Nokia's usual high standards. Even the speakerphone is very useable. Battery life is better than the norm, so you can expect to get around five hours of talk time or up to 400 hours when it's on standby.

There are also a number of quirks with the features that are included. The FM radio is mono only even though the phone is supplied with stereo headphones. The screen also uses older CSTN technology rather than the modern TFT displays found on most of the latest mobiles. The result is that the colours look very washed out, which is disappointing as the screen is already tiny and has a blocky 96x68-pixel resolution. The small screen size also means you have lots of scrolling to do when you need to read longer text messages.

Despite its low price we don't think the 2310 is a particularly good budget buy. Sure, it has decent battery life and good call quality, but it's built using very dated technology and the small screen means it's sometimes tricky to use.

The comment in the report that "as the handset is dual band only, you won't be able to use it if you venture abroad." is wrong. I bought mine in England May 2008 for 10 pounds ($21 OZ at the time) and it worked in Ireland, Singapore and Australia. It has worked with 3 different carriers SIM cards.
I asked for a phone with out bells and whistles and was given the Nokia 2310. It does all I want it to and I am happy with it

    • Good: Durable with indurance (baterly life >7 days, if few calls and no games played).
      Speaker phone is LOUD!
      Supports Caller ID.
    • Bad: Has none of the following; Camera, Music/Media play, Blue tooth, WiFi, External airial, Docking port, Torch/Light, Computer interfacing/PDA functions. No Bells or Whistles.

    Nofrills voice and textphone.
You get the phone, 3.5mm plug earphones (no controls), Wall-wart charger, and sim card.

This is an excellent 1st phone for the technophobe, that works right out of the box. I had this phone for 15 months, when it was stolen. This phone got coverage on the Vodephone network in regional WA, when a Nokia N95 didn't have coverage on the Telstra network. Also both phones got a accidental soaking in milk coffee. The N95 died at the scene.

    Bottom line;
I'm still concidering weather to get the same phone again, it's good value. While a camera would be usefull, in hindsight, the feachers that would have been most valued, is a light, and data backup to computer (lost valuable data when phone lost).

      Intuitive menu design.

This mobile phone is best for me. This is my first mobile phone. I like this because it is hard body and heavy duty.

    • Good: Strong. good speakerphone
    • Bad: No camera or bluetooth, but hey it does as it should.

Have had this phone for over a year, dropped numerous times - still going strong. Would like to update but can't find anything with a decent keypad size on a cap of $29, staying with it it's a good strong phone. Good loud handsfree also

    • Good: Easy to use

      Speakerphone is nice and loud

Has enough memory (for me anyway)

It takes a lot to kill this phone, I've dropped it countless times and barely a scratch!
    • Bad: It doesn't look that great

Mine has had a bit of trouble receving messages late

I've had this phone for over a year now, and it's only recently starting to screw up (not making calls properly and switching off at inconvnient times). It's excellent for people who don't need cameras, video, and all those random extras in a phone. It does what a mobile phone should do, and does it well.
