Following Samsung's lead, Nokia seems to be preparing to flood the market with touchscreens covering all the popular segments. We have the music and business phones already in the 5800 XpressMusic and the N97, and yesterday we reported on the 5800 Navigation Edition. Today, Nokia announced the cheapie.

Though cheapie might not be the most accurate way of describing this new touchscreen handset. After all, it will come packing the same connectivity hardware as both versions of the 5800; HSDPA, A-GPS, Bluetooth, a 3.2-inch 16 million colour display, plus it comes with the full suite of Nokia Ovi apps too, including Nokia Maps.

To cut a few corners and keep the price down, Nokia does plan to leave out a few key features, however. The camera will be a low-res 2-megapixel shooter, the lowest resolution camera we see in Nokia phones these days, and it doesn't look like this camera will have a photo light to assist it when shooting in dark places. Also, the 5230 will ship sans Wi-Fi, so people who love piggybacking on the Wi-Fi network at the office to watch YouTube might have to look elsewhere.

Our greatest disappointment is that Nokia's awesome Comes With Music offer won't be available with the 5230 in Australia, though it will be for customers in other markets throughout Asia and Europe. Comes With Music was one of the reasons we gave the 5800 XpressMusic an Editors' Choice award, after all, who doesn't love free music? If we don't get the music subscription then we hope that Nokia manages to keep the price for the 5230 extremely low when it is released in Australia in the fourth quarter of 2009.

The Good:battery duration-clarity-camera

The Bad:freezes a lot-low reception-text keys are too close-hard to update

for the first 90 days this phone is owsome although it is week in receiving signal. the battery is reliable, and when you speak on that phone is very clear. the camera takes clear pictures too. On the fourth month, the phone started to freeze a lot, very hard to update even on the Nokia website, T-mobile already sent me three replacements, and they act the same way. they internet browser starts by itself despite setting and the phone becomes very slow to respond. when trying to use the key pad on the screen the letters are too close you spend most of the time making sure the right word is typed. I used to like it, but for $100.00 and it cannot last one year at least comparing to knockouts from China that last 18 months. Nokia should redesign this phone. I have always used nokia, but this one is a waste of money.

The Good:It looks like an expensive phone

The Bad:Seems too thick?

I don't actually own this phone, but just judging by appearance, it wouldn't be shameful to carry this around. However, reading other reviews online, the speed of this phone is slow and the lack of wi-fi isn't exactly what makes a good phone.
For the same price, much better phones are available.
This phone best suits the teenage/tween years.

The Good:GPS and stuff

The Bad:Wifi, camera, no flash

Good touchscreen phone. I bought it unlocked for $249 at a store and it is quite nice with big touchscreen but there isn't camera flash or wifi but the rest is good currently

The Good:Price, easy to use for Nokia lovers

The Bad:No Wi-Fi or camera flash

Had this phone 2 weeks and so far so good. The touch is responsive and easy to work things out if you're a Nokia user. I don't use the Facebook app that comes pre-installed but use the 5230 bookmark instead. One concern is that when I get a text the screen stays black so you never know if it is your phone beeping, though it does have a notification light under the menu key.

The 5230 is way better value, the samsung has no GPS, 3G and only has a 2.6 inch 64k colour screen, while the Nokia has a 3.2 inch 16m colour screen. The Symbian OS on the Nokia also gives infinitly more opportunity for customisation and additional apps. The samsung has a proprietary OS, which no-one develops anything for. The only advantage the Samsung has is that it has a capcitive as opposed to a resistive touch screen. So, I'd get the Nokia.

I'm considering getting this phone, but I was just wondering if it had a slideout QWERTY keypad, or if there's just a QWERTY function on the touchscreen? Thanks
