Nokia 6030

By Warren Koh, CNET Asia on 14 November 2005

There is little more to this phone besides the most basic of handphone features. It is essentially just a device for making calls with a touch of class in its look.

4.1
  • Good: Simple design • FM radio • Affordable price • Speakerphone function
  • Bad: Minimal set of features • No connectivity (except GPRS) • Dualband
  • Specs: Flip • See more specifications
  • RRP: TBA

Just as there is a market for mobile phones choked full of the latest features, there is also a demand for basic handsets with nothing fancy at all. Nokia's latest venture, the 6030, is one such instance.

Design
At 104 x 44 x 18mm and weighing 90 grams, the Nokia 6030 is surprisingly lightweight despite its rather thick dimensions. On the upside, the phone comes with a comfortable, rounded design that gives it a somewhat sleek and thin look. The black Xpress-on cover that came with our test unit also added a metallic feel to the phone, even though most of its construction is made of plastic and its gloss finish leaves smudgy fingerprints easily. The 6030 is also available in champagne and silver.

The 128 x 128-pixel, 65K-colour screen performs well even under bright sunlight and the large keypad is easy on the thumbs and has a great tactile feel. However, the select/confirmation button stands out as being somewhat not as responsive.

Features
In terms of features, the 6030 is very similar to the Nokia 3100, which was also designed as a basic, functional phone with minimal features. The only connectivity options available are GPRS and WAP. Even that is limited to GPRS Class 6 and WAP 2.0. The absence of all other connectivity options means you must purchase the data cable to connect the phone to a computer or to another device.

While the phone runs on the Nokia's popular Series 40 platform, it has the barest of PIM features. You get Alarm, Calendar (limited to month-view only), a standard calculator and a simple currency converter. A slightly better converter can be found under the Applications folder.

The key feature on the 6030 is undoubtedly the integrated FM radio. Although the onboard tuner handles only mono-quality reception, you can preset up to 12 radio stations. The standard bundle includes a set of earphones with microphone.

Polyphonic ringtones are supported on the phone, together with the speakerphone function which is quite useful for handsfree discussions during calls.

During the review period, we encountered no issues with reception or voice clarity. The speakerphone was loud and clear and the supplied 900mAh Lithium-ion cell lasted for about five days of moderate use.

The highest SAR value for this handset is 0.70W/kg, which meets international guidelines for exposure to radio waves.

Nokia 6030 is directed at basic users and is ideal for the less tech-savvy older generation, the army boys and young children whose mobile needs are simple.

Have had the phone for over two years and have not had a single problem with it. Due to my heavy usah\ge, the casing has worn off and I have replaced it with aftermarket casings. Still with the original keypad and battery though. Battery use to last 3 days, with normal (business) usage. Now it lasts only a day.

    • Good: Extremely reliable. Extremely durable. User friendly to the extreme!!!
    • Bad: Screen darkens too quickly when locked.

screen blacks out to fast and when locked you cannot see if there is a message or missed call untill you unlock, as remains too dark. i have issues with the phone at least once a day disconnecting and hanging up. When on loudspeaker caller cannot hear me. I have returned this phone and they gave me a replacement. It is still the same Terrible. Worst phone i have ever had. I have had many Nokia phones.

This is a basic but stylish phone, looks more expensive than it is. OK, it doesn't have bluetooth or a camera and it doesn't play MP3, but once you have a good look at the feature set, you will be surprised at what useful little device it is. The short cuts are really useful when you get the hang of them, making it very convenient to operate. It cost $99 from Virgin Mobile, which included free airtime and top-up bonuses, a good deal. If you don't want unnecessary frills, this is a good choice.

    • Good: Loks much better than other cheap nokias, has all the basics for talking and texting, and the calendar and alarm clock are simple and useful. Good shortcuts, but that's standard Nokia.
    • Bad: Having big hands, I find the keys a bit small and close together. The keys are all convex too, and fingernails tend to skid off them a bit.

Nice basic phone for its price. I reckon the speakerphone and radio top it off.

    • Good: The reception and battery life are tops - it can standby for up to 9 days on a single charge
    • Bad: Too basic, no camera, no mp3 player
