Nokia 6120 Classic

By Jeremy Roche on 31 August 2007

Nokia's 6120 is a good all-rounder with fast Internet access at a very attractive price -- the camera isn't great, though.

8.0 7.7
  • Good: High-speed downloads • Mini-USB for PC transfers • Compatible with all 3G networks •
  • Bad: 2-megapixel camera takes poor shots • 2.5mm headphone jack
  • Specs: Candybar • Bluetooth, Next G, 3G, HSDPA • 35 MB • Numerical keypad • See more specifications
  • RRP: AU$549.00

The Nokia 6120 Classic is the first handset we've seen compatible with all the 3G networks in Australia, including Telstra's Next G network. It's a slimline smartphone appealing to those seeking a reliable, easy-to-use phone.

Design
Nokia's kept things simple with the 6120. It has a classic candybar design, a glossy black case and curved edges with a silver trim. The loudspeaker is placed on the side of the 6120, which means the sound doesn't get muffled when placed on a desk or table.

Nokia is starting to come around to the idea of standardised ports on its phones -- the 6120 includes a mini-USB connection at the bottom for data transfers. You'll still need an adaptor if you want to use your regular headphones as Nokia has stuck with a 2.5mm audio jack.

The 6120's keypad seemed a little bit cramped initially, but we adjusted to it during our test period. Navigation is painless with a four-way directional button under the screen and two soft-keys for various shortcuts. As usual, the camera can be fired by pressing a button on side of the phone.

A 256MB microSD card is supplied that can be easy swapped out on the side of the phone.

Features
The 6120 sports two cameras -- a 2-megapixel one on the back for taking photos and a lower-res one on the front for video calls. There's an LED flash on the back and nightmode to assist taking shots in the dark. Panorama shots and video capture are welcome additions. The camera's sequence mode lets you fire six shots in rapid succession -- about two per second.

Through the Gallery on the Nokia 6120, you can watch saved video clips, listen to music and voice recordings, stream video over 3G and view presentations.

Out of the box you can fit around 64 songs on the 256MB card. The 6120 supports cards up to 2GB, increasing the storage capacity to around 500 songs. We're a bit disappointed in the a rather lame set of headphones you get in the box -- there's very little bass and they're kind of uncomfortable after a few minutes.

Powered by the Symbian operating system, you can install third-party applications on the 6120 -- other applications such as PDF and Office document readers come pre-installed. We found one game called Marble on our test phone, but it's quick and easy to download more.

Performance
Call quality was good and we have no complaints about the volume of the earpiece for hearing people speak. The loudspeaker is more than adequate at maximum volume -- you'll won't have a problem hearing the 6120 ring.

The camera didn't fare so well, however. The shots we took with the 6120 tended to be a little blurry and colours tended to be washed out. The panorama feature of the camera automatically lines up and captures the next shot in a sequence, but we found it often mismatched the frames.

The battery life on the 6120 is great for a 3G phone -- we managed to get four days between charges with average use of calls and SMS and daily Web browsing of online news. With HSDPA (3.5G) speeds, we had fast Internet and downloading data was quick and trouble-free.

All things considered the Nokia 6120 Classic is a good all-round phone that is destined to become a popular handset due to its attractive price, decent feature set and support for all 3G networks in Australia.

the battery was performing quite well for 1+ year. then it went down hill quite quickly. the indicator is also not working, it still shows full bar, then when i make or take a call, it immediately shows "low battery" and sometimes immediately shuts down. now i need to charge daily. this is the shortest battery life i've come across and i've had many phones.

    • Good: nice features packed into a small package
    • Bad: short battery life span

I've used this phone for almost 2 years and had no problems with it. I got it because it was really good value for money when it just came out - few other phones with HSDPA and Bluetooth 2.0 were free on the $29 cap. It's probably a bit dated now and you might as well get a 6220 instead.
1 thing I don't like is the battery indicator doesn't really work, it shows full for most of the time. Once it drops by 1 bar, it reaches 0 within a few hours. The battery also doesn't last very long.

    • Good: HSDPA, Bluetooth 2.0, easy to find cable for mini USB port, microSD card removable without turning phone off, 16 million color screen
    • Bad: No GPS, camera does suck, batt indicator doesn't work

I just got this phone the other day and was wondering if the battery is only meant to last a day or what is up with it? My old 6085 battery would stay charged longer than this one. Could someone tell me if there having the same problem it would be greatly appreciated!.. Thanks, Renee

    • Good: It's alot better phone than my 6085 which only lasted me about a year and a half
    • Bad: battery life is not too good

go for N85 . its way better

    • Good: stylish. good music player. nice video playback. overall compared to N85 this phone is not so great
    • Bad: mostly the problem is batterylife when playing music drops easily and dents so easily

Small stylish phone. Just really unreliable. battery life is poor, would regularly kill it during a working day, but I do use the phone A LOT. Old 5120 lasted about 5 yrs, so was disappointed in the issues with this phone.

    • Good: size
    • Bad: 3 handset in 12 months, 1 locked up completely, new handset supplied; 2nd screeen died but phone worked for about a week before stopping altogether. Both overheated, particularly on bluetooth!,

For anyone requiring a phone packed with features then phone would be a great choice. The speed when using the internet is more than acceptable and the phone responds well when browsing menus and has the usual Nokia layout of screens with clear and bright resolution.
I have had two of these phones however and both have stopped working. When receiving calls they didn't ring and the caller couldn't hear me. It seems a common fault with this model. I read that if you turn the backlighting settings down to the minimum then this helps overcome this problem. I tried this and one of the phones works okay now but this is still annoying. I also think the camera is very poor in quality compared to the 2 megapixel on the Nokia N70 and Sony W810i. The phone definately heats up after longer calls and this becomes uncomfortable and concerning. I didn't get that with my N70 and to be honest this puts me off using this phone. Overall, this is the first Nokia phone I have ever considered replacing with another phone due to the problems I have experienced.

    • Good: Fast internet, spped, packed with great features, well presented display and handset
    • Bad: Poor camera, does heat-up during calls, can stop working (refer below), only average battery life.

3 weeks after I got a 6120 from FoneZone, I made my first 5 minute call. Burned my ear. They exchanged the handset, because it was inside 30 days. The second handset did the same thing, but because it was more than 30 days after I first bought it, they wouldn't exchange it.
"Nokia 6120s do that" was the response. "You mean you sold me a phone that you KNEW couldn't make calls of more than 5 minutes?" "Here, have an at-cost $8 plastic case, that will keep the phone further away from your ear."
Not happy. Not going back to FoneZone. Ever.

    • Good: good at everything except making long calls
    • Bad: overheating after 5 minutes talk time
