Nokia ends free music download service in 27 countries

Nokia is pulling the plug on its free music download service in 27 countries, according to Reuters. The world's largest phone-maker, however, will continue to bundle 12-month subscriptions to free music with selected phones in China, India and Indonesia; and six-month subscriptions in Brazil, Turkey and South Africa.

The Comes With Music service was first introduced in December 2007 and subsequently launched in London with the 5800 XpressMusic in October 2008. The music store catalogue carried tunes from major record labels including Universal Music Group, Sony BMG Entertainment, Warner Music Group and EMI, as well as independent artists. The service debuted in Australia and Singapore in February 2009.

"The markets clearly want a DRM-free music service," a Nokia spokesperson told Reuters, adding that the phone-maker will continue to offer DRM-free tunes via its Ovi Music Store in 38 countries. According to the news agency, users in the 27 countries can continue to download music until their subscriptions expire.
