Nokia N85

By Andrew Lim on 18 December 2008

The Nokia N85 is another solid N-series phone, but if you're looking for something different this won't be your bag.

From the model number, you'd think the N85 is a lesser version of the famous N95, but it's actually an upgrade. Is this a case of Nokia running out of ideas, or is it merely honing a deservedly popular phone? We took a good look at the N85 to see whether Nokia has cracked it again.

Design
The N85 is a solid-feeling slider phone that's smooth around the edges, giving it a more up-to-date feel than the blocky N95. Considering how many features it packs in, it doesn't feel chunky or too heavy.

Aside from the keypad, we found all the keys on the N85 well-designed and easy to press. There's even a handy toggle switch for locking and unlocking the N85 quickly. As for the keypad, we found it too flat for our liking, but not unusable.

The double sliding mechanism — which moves around too much on the N95 — feels more solid in the N85, and doesn't slide when it's in your pocket. Equally secure is the N85's camera cover — again, it won't open by mistake in your trousers and take photos of your keys.

We really appreciate that Nokia has placed a 3.5mm headphone jack at the top of the phone instead of on the side, making it much less fiddly to use. You'll also be glad to hear that charging and connecting to a PC can all be done via a micro-USB cable.

Worth noting is the N85's OLED display, which consumes less power than a standard LCD. The screen is bright and large enough to view text messages or watch YouTube videos on. We also found that the Opera Mini browser looked superb on it.

Features
The N85 offers up some truly useful features, starting with HSDPA and Wi-Fi — you can access the web almost everywhere you go. The on-board browser works well enough, but we prefer using Opera Mini, which you can download for free and offers a neat way of viewing full web pages.

GPS means you can find your location and plan trips, using Nokia Maps, which comes pre-installed, or you can download Google Maps. We didn't have any problems picking up satellites, but as expected, the GPS doesn't work indoors.

On the back of the N85 lies a 5-megapixel camera with auto-focus and dual LEDs. It's very easy to use, with a simple interface, and we found the picture quality to be very good, even in low light — the LEDs providing more illumination than expected.

Equally unexpected is the built-in FM transmitter, which allows you to play music wirelessly through a car radio. It's something that's been made available in the past using third-party technology, but having it built-in is really useful.

As we mentioned before, there's a 3.5mm headphone jack and the Nokia N85's dedicated media keys mean using it as a music player is really easy. The music player interface is straightforward and gives you the option to shuffle tracks, adjust the equaliser and create playlists.

Performance
Audio quality during calls was loud and clear, as was the loudspeaker, but we recommend using a Bluetooth headset (the N85 supports A2DP stereo) for hands-free calls. Battery life is quoted at 6.9 hours talk time using GSM and 4.5 hours using 3G. Standby time is 363 hours using GSM or 3G. In real life, we found that with moderate use it lasted over a day before needing to be recharged.

Conclusion
After spending some quality time with the Nokia N85, we're not sure why Nokia didn't just launch this as the N95's successor instead of the N96. The N85 is a refined phone that packs in a whole bunch of features into an attractive casing. Our only disappointment is that the keypad is a little flatter than we would like, but the rest of it left us very happy.

Wi-Fi, HSDPA and a music player you can listen to by simply plugging a pair of standard headphones straight in — great stuff. OK, it's not a revolutionary product, but it is a very good one nevertheless, and if you're an N95 fan looking for something a little smaller and better-looking, you could do a lot worse than this.

    • Good: nothing
    • Bad: battery, freezes all the time, lags, turns off on its own

i was really disappointed by the phone, was told to do upgrades that made no difference, i even sent it back for repair and the problem was still there even though i was told it was fixed! this experience has really turned me off nokias...

    • Good: lots of good stuff
    • Bad: lots of bugs

Notice how this phone is now never advertised by JBHifi, WOW, etc as the phone for any of their phone plans??? That's because Nokia know it's a bug riddled disappointment and don't send it out anymore!

    • Good: Takes great photos, really clear screen, not too much lag, nice looking, 8GB
    • Bad: Scratches and smudges easily, keypad would be hard for larger fingers, speaker phone microphone doesn't seem to pick up your voice that well

I really like this phone, it's never crashed for me like some others have. The camera actually takes some really decent photos. Battery is pretty good, i charge it about every 2-3 days. The screen is really clear and bright except in bright sunlight where it's really hard to see it. I'd recommend it.

    • Good: pretty light, good slide, 2 cameras
    • Bad: batter runs out within 30-36hrs from a full recharge, and without using the net, bluetooth or any applications it simply just runs out very quickly.

does anyone know why the phone log just clears itself automatically. makes it very annoying when i have to go to the contacts to make a call rather than from the recent log. the battery issue is one that annoys me tremendously.

    • Bad: Battery

When in standby I only get 36 hours max before going flat. Had phone replaced & new battery and does the same thing. Have to carry a spare battery with me or plug in every chance I get. Phone is 1 month old. Dont like it much, it creakes and you can feel the battery cover moving around when talking.

    • Good: Camera (ok), GPS, screen size, reception strength in rural areas, headphone jack, cables in kit, phone clarity
    • Bad: buttons on keypad not easily felt, keypad unlock/lock switch on the side

I love the phone. As soon as i got it i ordered Garmin GPS maps off ebay for $20 which are better than Nokia ones and its a s*** load cheap as its just one $20 payment not yearly subscriptions. Headphone jack is getting a workout, its in the best spot for when you put the phone in your pocket.
The camera is ok needs a bigger and better lens though. Flash is great.

Over all very happy with it, its a hell of alot easy and better to use than any rubbish touch screen phones that people purchase to look like a douche.

    • Good: Superb multimedia, internet, email client, telephony
    • Bad: OLED screen in sunlight, particularly taking pictures

I got this phone unlocked 8 months ago. Hardware has been solid, I'm not thrilled with the keypad. The plastic frame does creak a bit when pressed. The slider is solid both ways. The bundled cables are brilliant - I use the headset (with better earphones) constantly. There is a handy 8g data card in the box, I upgraded to 16 for music.
Telephony is good, VoIP is good (I use Fring).
The phone shines in its multimedia capability tho' - camera is good, music app including podcasting is really good - playback beats my iPod (so nice to live without the clickwheel)! Love the FM radio. The FM transmitter is meh tho'. Photo gallery is usable, its easy to share to Facebook or Flickr. I love watching video on the OLED screen on the subway! The web browser is fine too and I'm surprised at how useful the email client is on this Nseries phone. There was a free Dictionary and Converter app thrown in with the subsequent firmware updates (I'm running 30.019). The phone is stable. The only small annoyance is the perpetual access for WLAN requests from web apps. The phone makes a great modem via Bluetooth if you're stuck. Nokias Mac software means my phone and my laptop play nice. I'm enjoying Ovi files - still waiting for a Mac version of Ovi suite tho'! I have been delighted with the phone overall - probably the best phone I've used (most recent prev K800i, Treo, iPhone 3G). This phone does all the things I wanted from previous phones... but better! It a real example of a converged device and is all I carry with me on holidays and trips. Now that a whole new slew of phones are being churned out from Espoo these babys will drop in price - I'd say nab one!!

Maybe Nokia should start to think about recalling this crappy phone? There seems to be the same faults on everyone's phone and if you look at customer comments from overseas, it looks as though they have the same faults too! I thought mine had "come good" as it worked fine for 3 weeks straight but then it started to randomly swith off when dialing and the centre button wouldn't work when trying to use it in the music folder! But it would work fine elsewhere???? So turn it off and start again! AGAIN! Anyone would think it was loaded with windows 95!!!
