The Nokia N95 8GB is an updated version of the best-selling original N95 and while it's still rather chunky, there are a few serious changes to it that make it a significantly better mobile phone than its predecessor.

Design
Packing a larger screen than the original N95, we really enjoyed viewing content on the N95 8GB, particularly watching videos and browsing the Web. The navigation keys at the bottom of the screen, although smaller, seemed easier to press too.

Nokia's got rid of the somewhat pointless media menu that appears when you slide the original N95 down and you can navigate the 8GB's start page normally. Overall, the interface felt snappier to use and the N95 8GB's boot-up time was far quicker.

At the back of the N95 8GB, the fiddly camera cover is gone. The advantage of not having a cover is that you no longer have to worry about the camera accidentally being activated in your pocket, which regularly happened on the original N95.

A minor but noteworthy feature is the N95 8GB's black casing. It's amazing how a change of colour can bring out a phone's sexy side and we think Nokia may have sold even more original N95s if it had come in black.

The N95 may be the convergence king, but the N95 8GB is still as big as its predecessor and not a good choice if you value your pocket space. It is "many things", as the N95 adverts suggest, but it's also rather a chunky monkey.

At first we thought the double slider was a cool feature, but it's worn off now and we would prefer not to have it. When you're pulling it in and out of your pocket the slider mechanism can move up and down, activating the phone.

Features
The N95 8GB's greatest improvement over its predecessor is, obviously, the 8GB of on-board storage for all your music and photos -- or any other data you want to tote around. The extra space makes it a multimedia mammoth, and importantly, lets you install many more applications.

Similar to the iPhone, the 8GB of on-board memory is non-expandable, which has its limitations. The main issue is that unlike a removable memory card, you have to use the USB cable and can't use a card reader, which may annoy some people.

Overall
Upgraded mobile phones are usually disappointing, but the Nokia N95 8GB is a truly superb successor. The larger screen, 8GB memory and black casing are so seductive, we were sad to see it go back to Nokia. It's still pricey, however, and it's still really rather chunky.

    This is a good quality multimedia computer. It has improved alot from the Nokia N95.
    It has a screen of 2.8 inches, since it is QVGA and the screen is larger the pixels are more visible. Although the pixels are visible I still like it. It has an accelerometor sensor. The 5 mp camera was a huge step in camera phones. But a flaw lies within the video recoder. it freezes when recording. I had to swap my phone three times i think but it still had the problem.....
    Any way it has 8gb of memory which is very useful considering that the picture takes up more memory.
    This phone can also function horizontally. You can view adobe documents, microsoft word, powerpoint, exel. It has a barcode scanner although its not the typical one we use in Australia which is the one with the lines. This barcode is the one with square symbols. The call quality was ok. The upper piece of the device feels fragile as if you can snap it just like that, but its actually strong.It runs on s60 3rd edition feature pack 1. I would prefer a feature pack with UI effects like the one on the Hiptop. The Nokia N95 8gb is a smartphone which is based on entertainment features. Overall it is a very handy phone to have.

    • Good: 8gb on board memory, wide 2.8 TFT QVGA screen, stereo speakers, 5 mp camera, dual slider, more swifter, flush body
    • Bad: Video camera bug with nearly all nokia n95 8gb's, loose slider, doesn't feel sturdy, design fault, smudgy screen, screen not vibrant

    No longer king of Smart Phones...

    • Bad: * No camera lens protector
      * No RDS system for the FM radio
      * Below average GPS performance, no 3rd party apps support
      * Extra charges for voice assisted navigation
      * Cannot edit office documents
      * No card slot
      * Doesn't charge when connected to USB

    Err how can it score 11 out of 10 for user rating?

    Granted it is a great phone, but this just raises doubt over how scores are collated even with all the bogus entries.

    • Good: Much improved over the original, and after playing with the newer incarnations (N96 and N85) it still has yet to be bettered.

      Excellent array of apps and a very good developer kit for making your own.

      An almost feature complete smartphone with a decent battery life that has not been massively underclocked; rather rare lately.
    • Bad: It is a bit thick compared to newer competitors on the market however they have pretty much all failed in more important areas.

    I've had this phone for about a year now, and don't listen to what anyone else say's. I have NEVER experienced any spontaneous restarting of this phone, sits comfortably in my pocket and never gets scratches or anything. It still look's brand new and there has been no "peeling of the paint" so far. 10/10

    Great choice for those who like their smart phones, this would have to be the best on the market.

    • Good: fantastic camera & storage
    • Bad: no protection for the camera lens, Nokia would have been wise to keep the slide protector that came with the original N95 model

    I agree with Megaphone, this phone was tops at first, but now ive had it for 6 months, and it turns on and off randomly, sometimes when i open it it turns off, gets horribly slow sometimes, and sends msgs twice to mates.. I have a friend that has had this phone twice, first the speakers blew up and had to return it, now its freezing and doing what ive said above. otherwise, it was pretty good but just doesnt have the legs to run out a full plan without going off the rails it seems
