Nokia N95 8GB

An upgrade to the crowd-pleasing, GPS-toting N95, this music-focused version adds a larger screen and 8GB of internal memory to its predecessor.

The Nokia N95 8GB is an updated version of the best-selling original N95 and while it's still rather chunky, there are a few serious changes to it that make it a significantly better mobile phone than its predecessor.

Design
Packing a larger screen than the original N95, we really enjoyed viewing content on the N95 8GB, particularly watching videos and browsing the Web. The navigation keys at the bottom of the screen, although smaller, seemed easier to press too.

Nokia's got rid of the somewhat pointless media menu that appears when you slide the original N95 down and you can navigate the 8GB's start page normally. Overall, the interface felt snappier to use and the N95 8GB's boot-up time was far quicker.

At the back of the N95 8GB, the fiddly camera cover is gone. The advantage of not having a cover is that you no longer have to worry about the camera accidentally being activated in your pocket, which regularly happened on the original N95.

A minor but noteworthy feature is the N95 8GB's black casing. It's amazing how a change of colour can bring out a phone's sexy side and we think Nokia may have sold even more original N95s if it had come in black.

The N95 may be the convergence king, but the N95 8GB is still as big as its predecessor and not a good choice if you value your pocket space. It is "many things", as the N95 adverts suggest, but it's also rather a chunky monkey.

At first we thought the double slider was a cool feature, but it's worn off now and we would prefer not to have it. When you're pulling it in and out of your pocket the slider mechanism can move up and down, activating the phone.

Features
The N95 8GB's greatest improvement over its predecessor is, obviously, the 8GB of on-board storage for all your music and photos -- or any other data you want to tote around. The extra space makes it a multimedia mammoth, and importantly, lets you install many more applications.

Similar to the iPhone, the 8GB of on-board memory is non-expandable, which has its limitations. The main issue is that unlike a removable memory card, you have to use the USB cable and can't use a card reader, which may annoy some people.

Overall
Upgraded mobile phones are usually disappointing, but the Nokia N95 8GB is a truly superb successor. The larger screen, 8GB memory and black casing are so seductive, we were sad to see it go back to Nokia. It's still pricey, however, and it's still really rather chunky.

As the Nokia N95 8GB is an incremental upgrade on the original N95 be sure to check out our full review of the N95 for complete specs, and watch our video review.

The Good:Battery, camera, stability, build, call quality

The Bad:video quality, some useless icons

I have had the Nokia N95 8GB for more than two years now and have been totally happy with it. I actually have finished my contract and have ordered iPhone 4's as upgrades for my wife and daughter - but I haven't bothered upgrading...because I am that happy with my N95 8GB.

The photos are huge, the stability is excellent and the call quality well above average. I haven't required it to go in for repairs or service since I have owned it. If you want a quality non-touchscreen phone that is solid...Nokia N95 8GB is for you.

The Good:camera, memory space.

The Bad:slowest phone ever. by the time you open up the camera to take the picture, the moment has passed.

I've had mine for 2 years now. i thought it was a good idea at the time, but after a few months of sitting in front of my computer for god knows how many hours trying to load music, i was over it.
The processor is ridiculously slow. Even after deleting all my messages it still takes 10 or more seconds to open anything.
Ive also had problems in the form of every time i get this phone (ive gone through 3 due to theft, and water damage) it has some sort of bug in the video which causes it to turn itself off.
Im going to get a new phone today since ive just paid this one off.
hope it's a hell of a lot better than the N95 8GB

The Good:great features and not sluggish

The Bad:little thick, slider may become loose on some models though can be easily tightened

@ elysimo, the exact same thing happened to my 6220c three days ago. i opened it up and left it to dry overnight though no luck the next morning. i used a hairdryer to completely dry it internally on low heat of course and now it works fine. i dont know if it was just a freak accident that a hairdryer worked for me but it may help you.

I dropped my phone in the water and managed to retrieve and dry it out. The light still goes the screen is lit up but nothing happens. Went in have it fixed was told they couldn't due to condensation. Can anyone advise me please

The Good:reliable, great camera, wifi

The Bad:slow GPS

I've had the N95 8GB for 14 months. I still find it a thrilling phone. Very reliable, fast, nice big screen. The camera in the phone is excellent. Before going on a recent trip to the USA I compared it to my Panasonic Lumix digital camera and found the only significant areas where they did not compare were the poor flash and lack of optical zoom on the Nokia, so I went the whole holiday just using the N95 8GB. Also I soon found I was able to use Wifi in the hotels to get my e-mails and surf the web (without using high-priced foreign carriers' 3G data).

My carrier is 3, who introduced a Push e-mail program earlier this year. Therefore I can receive my e-mails no matter where I am, as soon as they come through (using my own domain's servers, too!!!). Fantastic.

With its 8GB memory, I use it as my ipod and can play videos, too.

Love this phone - much cheaper than the iPhone, yet does all I need, plus much more. And it has video calling (iPhones don't).

My only problem is the GPS is incredibly slow at getting its first lock after starting the GPS. Often I wait 15 minutes and give up, restart the GPS and it locks on in about a minute. Funny thing was it never got a satellite lock at all when I was in the USA, so paying for the walking maps in the USA was a waste of money.
