Norton Internet Security 2007

By Robert Vamosi on 23 January 2007

Norton Internet Security 2007 makes significant gains over last year, including cutting-edge rootkit and behavioral monitoring features found nowhere else, but the overall package could be serious overkill for the average desktop owner.

    • Good: none
    • Bad: power sapping, memory hogging, programs crashing, infections undetected, poor customer service, no return calls, will not honour cashback offers.

I installed NIS 1/1/07 and it is now 3/5/07 and I am still waiting for my cashback. Do not buy with cashback offer. They will not honour it. Their customer support is shocking, I had a trojan detected just days after it was installed. It has slowed down my PC considerably. The memory use is ridiculous, and the background scans reduce the PC to a calculator. There are serious problems with this product, windows crashing, programs shutting down, inaccessible web pages like imdb.com and any IT pages in the "australian" newspaper website, etc. Avoid this product at all cost !!!!

    • Good: 50
    • Bad: 50 Secure Clean finds all the Internet and email traffic supposedly deleted by Norton

Dual boot; one works ok with no evidence FWCfg.exe exists (TaskManager).
On other boot FWCfg.exe virtually locks up computer, Is this a Norton prgram?

    • Good: Good when it works
    • Bad: Poor support.
      unstable.

very unstable, poor support, only good when it's stable. Had the fwcfg.exe problem too.

    • Good: None
    • Bad: Sucks

The file FWCFG.EXE was using 100% of CPU resources all the time so nothing else could run. Control panel took 3 minutes to open! Wouldn't uninstall at first because it cliamed Liveupdate was running (couldn't find any evidence of this. In the end I had to systematically 'turn off' all the features so that it would uninstall. Once uninstalled machine returned to normal speed.

    • Good: Interface appears a little easier to navigate. Firewall rules are easier to tweak.
    • Bad: Feels heavy and clunky compared to previous versions. EXTREMELY slow boot and shut down times. Overall system sped slowed significantly.

Been using NIS since 2002. I like getting everything in one box. Always seemed to run ok up to now. Everyone touts the 2007 version as being faster but this one has slowed my PC to sub-Pentium speeds. Could be in part due to multiple drives but boot times take more than 3.5 minutes from BIOS to programs being able to be accessed. Add another minute for IE to open once you click on it. NIS seems to be getting too fat for the SOHO user. I paid for it now so I'll have it for the year until the subscription runs out but doubt I'll get 2008. Security and protection are important but are useless if providing them makes the PC unable to perform.

I have used 2004 & 2005 symatec software firewall and had very little trouble withit but last november updated to 2007 version all has been ok until recenttly when my pc would show a pci/ip error 733 when connecting to my broadband connection or using outlook express .i contacted my ISP and checked all my network and dail up info which was correct then after several hours of frustrating time tried disabling my Norton software firewall it worked perfect ,when re enabled it worked ok for a while on a few dailups then reappeared. there is something seriusly wrong with this issue of symatec 2007

    • Good: None
    • Bad: Sorry Symantec, but this release is a crock!

Sadly I must agree with the bad comments. A friend has installed NIS 2007 and I have just spent 2 days trying to work out why his machine had slowed to a dead stop. Pankaj: Thank you for the information.

Tareq: Thank you for contacting Symantec Live Technical
      Support
Tareq: Please note that we are experiencing higher than normal
message volumes. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused and thank you for your patience.
Tareq: I understand that you are unable to access your VPN connection. Am I right?
      Mr._mahmoud_xxxxxxxxx: yes
Tareq: First we will check whether you are able to access your VPN with Internet worm protection disabled.
Tareq: Steps to disable or turn off IWP in NAV 2007:

      1. Open Norton AntiVirus 2007.
      2. Under Settings, click on open.
      3. Click on Internet Worm Protection under Web Browsing.
A small pop-up will display with 2 buttons turn off( or turn on) and Configure button.
      4. Click on turn off button to disable it
      Mr._mahmoud_xxxxxxxxx: yes i can
Mr._mahmoud_xxxxxxxxx: i have tried that and it works without worm protection
Tareq: mahmoud, Symantec is currently aware of this issue and our team is currently working on it.
Tareq: As of now I suggest you to disable your internet worm protection and access your VPN.
Tareq: NOTE: Disabling Internet Worm protection does not leave you unprotected against viruses that are distributed as NAV Auto-Protect will scan any incoming files, including email, as they are saved to your hard drive. Internet worm protection is just another layer on top of this. To make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have the most recent virus definitions.
Mr._mahmoud_xxxxxxxxx: this is from your web site:
      Tareq: Yes Please.
Mr._mahmoud_xxxxxxxxx: Many problems have been fixed in the latest 2007 Vista compatible product update. If you have Norton AntiVirus 2007 that was purchased online before January 20 2007 or was purchased from a store before Feb 1 and you have a valid subscription, then you are eligible for the 2007 Vista compatible product update. To update your Norton program, click here.

Tareq: Please be informed that as an existing Norton 2006/2007 Customer with a current subscription, you are eligible to download the latest release of our product (2007.2) free of cost. The 2007.2 Norton products should resolve the issue that you are currently encountering with the 2006/2007 version of your Norton program.
Mr._mahmoud_xxxxxxxxx: why don't you just publish this resolution (which is not really a resolution)?
Mr._mahmoud_xxxxxxxxx: I am dealing with an installation with 200 licences, it's not just one computer...
Tareq: mahmoud, Please accept my apologies for the inconvenience.
Mr._mahmoud_xxxxxxxxx: is there a registry modification I can send to people to run and disable this "feature"?
Tareq: I am sorry to say this but we do not have any feature like this we need to manually disable Internet worm protection.
Mr._mahmoud_xxxxxxxxx: so you are suggesting we constatnly have NAV icon flash red in the system tray
      Tareq: Yes please.
Mr._mahmoud_xxxxxxxxx: well, I am going to remove NAV from all of these computers and ask for a refund, who should I talk to? I will use McAfee instead
Tareq: To get a refund you need to contact our customer support service.
Tareq: In order to assist you in resolving the issue I recommend that you please contact Symantec Customer Service. We at technical support are not trained to address subscription issues.
      Tareq:
However, our Customer Care Specialists will be happy to assist you better in this regard. Please contact Symantec Customer Service directly by telephone, at 1-800-441-7234.
