Olympus Tough Lite 850SW

By Alex Kidman on 14 March 2008

With its shocking pink design, you won't miss the 850SW. With its shockproof, waterproof and snow proof casing, you're not likely to accidentally destroy it either.

Design
If there's one thing that you couldn't accuse the review sample of the 850SW that landed in CNET.com.au's offices of being, it's shy. Our review model came in just about the brightest pink we've ever seen on a tech product, and a slightly metallic pink, at that. For those who prefer non-carmine hues, it's also available in silver and black. Sorry, we'll type that again. It's available in "premium" silver or "piano" black, as well as our model, which is described as "cassis" pink.

The 850SW is a compact digital camera, measuring in at 93.6mm by 60.9mm by 21.3mm and weighing 136 grams. The front of the camera is relatively sedate (colours aside), but the rear of the unit is awash with buttons; a slender zoom control above a selection wheel, which itself sits above a five way selector that's ringed by four further selection buttons. All in, you've got a choice of no less than twelve buttons to hit, and all of them are on the rather small side. Given that the top of the 850SW only has a shooting and power button on it, we're not sure why Olympus' designers didn't at least stick the zoom controls on the top. It certainly would have made composing shots on the 850SW's 2.5-inch LCD much easier. You're limited to only the LCD display, which can be a problem in bright light.

Features
The 850SW features an 8 megapixel sensor with a 3x optical zoom. The zoom is entirely enclosed within the lens, as the other big selling point of the 850SW is that it's waterproof (up to 3 metres) and shockproof (up to 1.5 metres). It's even snow proof for up (or is it down?) to -10°C, although the opportunities to properly test that in the Australian climate are going to be few and far between.

The 850SW features 24 different scene modes, and while the small controls mean we wouldn't want to have to select them in a hurry, it's nice to have the variety. They are labelled as Portrait, Landscape, Landscape + Portrait, Night Scene, Night + Portrait, Sport, Indoor, Candle, Self Portrait, Available Light Portrait, Sunset, Fireworks, Cuisine, Behind Glass, Documents, Auction, Shoot & Select 1, Shoot & Select 2, Beach & Snow, Pre-capture movie, Under Water Snapshot, Under Water Wide 1, Under Water Wide 2, and Under Water Macro, which is quite exhaustive for a point and shoot compact.

Like all of Olympus' compact range, the 850SW uses xD media cards. Given the basic victory of SD cards -- and the emergence of ever-larger SDHC cards -- it's an annoying complication, as a quick web search finds xD cards at higher prices and in much shorter supply than their SD card brethren.

Performance and Image quality
The one thing we noticed -- and we've already commented on -- is the relatively small size of the 850SW's controls. That's a personal observation, and it will differ depending on the manual dexterity of the user, but we'd suggest you give the camera a quick in-store test drive prior to purchase. Many people with larger hands will struggle.

As a basic point and shoot camera, the 850SW has a lot going for it. Its additional toughness is a boon for a camera that can be thrown easily into a bag; not that you want to treat it badly, but simply because it's likely to survive more easily than other compacts will, especially where children are involved.

To test the 850SW's suitability in these situations, we took it swimming, cycling, and for the ultimate in bump testing, onto some dodgem cars. The resultant dodgem photos weren't great, but that's more to do with being bumped than the camera itself. For the most part, the 850SW gave us good basic response, within the limitations of a 3x optical zoom and moderate shutter speed.

Olympus touts the 850SW as having face detection technology that will automatically adjust the exposure of a shot to give better colour reproduction of scenes automatically. In our tests this worked reasonably well, although we did find leaving it on did lead to some pictures with a slightly washed-out appearance.

The 850SW is a good camera, and at AU$399 (RRP) a very competitively priced one. Our only large caveats with it are physical -- the size of the buttons -- and technological - the use of expensive xD memory cards where SD cards are cheaper and more readily available. For those with small children, or people who enjoy an active lifestyle and don't want to destroy a range of compact cameras, the 850SW is just about a perfect match.

I LOVED this camera while it lasted. Both my sister and I each had one given to us by our father for Christmas, and just after the one year mark, they both died. Her's started to blur, and mine drowned (leaked while swimming). I had swam with it before with no issues. Just warning that it's really not as "_proof" as it claims to be, so take good care of it, and MEMORIZE the manual. You have to send it in every year to have the casing changed to maintain it's waterproof quality, for an additional $35 a year....

    • Good: Shock proof if just carrying in hands or back pack

      Water Proof

takes fairy clear pics for inside pics
    • Bad: Battery life poor
XD card not most common card accepted by computre card readers be warned!

Not overly good pics for more demading shots

    Ok for a beginner/basic shots i guess

Battery Life poor compared to others
Shock proof for falls if carring in hand

I would recomend people get the 1050 or up series as has better pics & higher shock proof rating.

I'm considering this camera. One review I read said it would also use a micro SD card...Another review said only XD. Which is right? Also...how's the video? Can you zoom and unzoom while you are shooting video? What is the format of video on the camera card?

Im thinking about getting this camera for christmas, but i want one where you can take it into the pool and stuff, even though this one is waterproof, does that actually define the fact that you can take it into the pool, or does it mean that you can likedrop it in the pool and know it won't break ?

    I actually hate this camera!

  • st23r gave 8/10 on 08/08/2008 00:46 Report abuse

    • Good: extremely durable
quite impressive flash for a compact camera
      shake-reduction works very well
brilliant LCD with clear color even in high-light situations
      nice colors in photos
      not much shutter-lag
      nice look
      movie mode
comes with *pretty* good Olympus Program

    • Bad: not enough (if any) manual controls
only 3x optical zoom, although that's not too bad
      autofocus can sometimes be annoying
sometimes takes a while between taking photos
battery life's mediocre, but isn't the best
      shutter speeds could be longer

the image quality isn't the best, and to tell you the truth, the camera isn't a very good point-and-shoot, however if you spend the time to choose the best settings to suit the scene and use a tripod, you can produce some excellent and stunning photos. some of the photos i've taken with the 850 are much more impressive than some of the photos i've taken with my Nikon DLSR. i'm not saying that it will always be better, but you can get some really good photos out of this camera. full-size-view of the photos will always be blurry, but at about 70% or less, the photos can be very clear and very nice. it's quite inconsistent, because some of the photos are very noisy and very blurry, but the photo you take 10 seconds after that could be perfect. a lot of people say that the buttons are too small, but i have found no problem with them, and i have quite large hands...

two of the few things i didn't like about this camera are:
    1) it's almost all manual, and you can't choose any settings yourself. however, there are a lot of manual controls, so if you read the instruction manual you will find that you can choose good settings.
    2) shutter speed. shutter speed is a maximum of 4 seconds (in night mode), although when i try, it only goes for about 1 second. 4 seconds is about average for compact cameras, but i would much prefer if it had a 15 seconds or more shutter speed.
it's only 3x optical zoom, but it isn't actually that bad. it's a great camera for landscape photography. it's not as good with macro photography, but is still reasonably impressive. i've gotten some great macro shots with this camera.

all together i highly recommend this camera. especially if you're like me and will throw it around all day, drop it and get it dirty (you can wash it off with water). it's not 'shock resistant', it's 'shock PROOF'. it's officially up to about eye hight, but it's probably a bit more. i drop it approx 20 times a day and it hasn't even got a single scratch or dent in the 10 months I've had it.
    great camera. worth the money.

    • Good: waterproof
    • Bad: casing is not shockproof

I love the camera. Easy and fun to use. Although they say I can get a camera with a better image quality for the same price, I'm quite happy with the images it produces. However, there was one and only time it was dropped, from my waist down. The corner of the camera had a small dent which prevented the USB cover to close properly which would cause a problem if it would be used underwater. Operation wise, it still worked perfectly. The nice people of Olympus did replace part of the casing which was damaged since it was still under warranty.

    • Good: waterproof
      snow proof
      shockproof
      crushproof
      face detection
      shake reduction
      high ISO (with night mode)
      high resoloution LCD screen
      5X digital zoom
      avalable in 3 colours
      LOTS of settings
      small and compact
      8mp great image quality
      lithium long-lasting battery
      warranty included
    • Bad: only 3X optical zoom
      small controls
      shutter-speed is only... meh.

great camera. not exaclty light, not exaclty heavy, but still easy. if they made it light, it wouldn't be weather proof. it's pocket size, and definately compact. obviously, not the best camera, but it is probably the best for its price. 8mp is more than enough, but the lens is the main priority. olympus lenses are probably 6 or 7 out of 10, not as good as canon, and definately not as good as nikon. a Nikon 7mp camera probably gives better quality photos that an olympus 12mp camera, although the 12 mp photos would be bigger. although, with the olympus 850, because of all the differant modes, shake reduction, and differant ISO settings, you really cant tell the differance. unless you make the photo 19-20 inch (or bigger), if you compare it to any 12mp camera, you wont be able to tell which is which. the shake reduction works great, and choosing which setting to use is easy and good since theres just so many.
i just got a black one today and i'm thrilled. the pictures are great quality, and the camera works well in low-light, which is hard to find in cameras. there is no noise. maybe if you blew the picture up really high, and looked at it with a magnifying glass, you could see some noise. but no visible noise at all.

it sais on the review that the buttons are small and hard to use, and they ARE small, but they are still easy to use. i've had no trouble. i got mine like... 3 hours ago and i've already dropped it about 10 times, and then put it under water for 20 mins... just to test. it still works fine.

i'm not sure how long the battery charges for, 'caus mines still charging. it lasts for hours, but before you use the camera for the first time, you have to charge it.
