Optus has launched two unlimited data roaming packages for Australians travelling to select destinations in Asia.
The Bridge DataRoamUnlimited packs are available in two options: a $27, three-day pack; and a $40, five-day pack. If the user continues to use their phone past the nominated days, they will be charged at Optus' standard roaming rates of $0.15 per kilobyte, or $15.36 per megabyte (for Bridge Alliance customers).
The Bridge DataRoamUnlimited packs will use the network of the Bridge Alliance, Asia Pacific's largest mobile alliance group (Optus is a founding member). Optus customers must ensure that when they travel to Asia, they manually select a Bridge Alliance network on their mobile phone.
"Optus is committed to giving Australians more choice and control ... We know Australians depend heavily on the internet to organise their travel and stay in touch whilst overseas," said Gavin Williams, Optus consumer marketing director.
However, in the small print, it was noted that separate packs must be purchased for separate countries, so if Optus customers wish to travel between Indonesia and the Philippines, then they will need to purchase two packs.
Some of the Asian destinations covered in this new plan for Australians include Hong Kong (CSL), Indonesia (Telkomsel), Malaysia (Maxis), Philippines (Globe), Singapore (SingTel), South Korea (SK Telecom), Taiwan (Taiwan Mobile) and Thailand (AIS). Macau (CTM) and India (Airtel) will be added in the coming months, according to Optus.
