Optus iPhone 4 stock 'all but sold'

By Josh Taylor on 30 July 2010

in brief On the first day of launch, Optus has confirmed it is on the verge of selling out of the iPhone 4.

In a statement provided to ZDNet Australia, Optus said that store stock for the iPhone 4 was "all but sold" after the first day of sales. Optus expects to receive another shipment of the smartphone from Apple in the next week, but is advising customers that it may be up to four weeks before they receive their iPhone 4, as the demand might outstrip the shipment size.

The company had received 100,000 pre-orders for the product prior to the launch.

Vodafone's Twitter account also indicated that the device had been a big seller, saying it had "limited stock".

Telstra had also experienced high demand for the phone.

"The iPhone 4 has been flying out the doors at Telstra stores across Australia... At many stores we have temporarily sold out of 32GB iPhone [handsets]; however, we're replenishing stock as quickly as possible and taking down our customers' details so they can purchase them as soon as new stock arrives."

Many customers have turned to the telco's Twitter account to ask whether stores still have any stock available; however, the company's social media representatives have said they are not aware of the stock levels of individual Telstra outlets.

Why are people so all-fired up to get one on the first day? Or even in the first week! Get some impulse control for crying out loud - it's not like it's a unique item that everybody else won't have. Within a year, probably every other person (ok, maybe not quite that many) will likely have one. Do you even know why you want it? What will you use it for?

If you've done the research, you still want it and it's essential to get it early on because you might otherwise die, good on you, go for it. Everyone else, use the grey matter between your ears, take your time, you'll get one if you want / need one eventually.

Heck, there will probably be discounts rolled out in 3-6 months time ... why not wait?

I went into the Apple reseller three weeks ago and said that I wanted and iphone 4 when it came out. He contacted me on monday asking me if I still wanted one. I told him yes and he said he will put one aside for me. On friday morning I went in and fifteen minutes later I walked out with my new iphone and connected sim.
I little bit of planning save alot of time.

You are lucky, as it seems to have been a complete schmozzle for a rollout. The only shops with adequate stock were Apple, and as these are only in city centres, very impracticle for most people. It is a shame that Apple do not learn from each rollout and accept they hype, as one day it will bite them in the ....

You need to remember Optus will get X amount of units from Apple allocated to them. Optus will then need to allocate them to all their stores plus allow for online sales. Also they probably keep a percentage to allow for faulty units that need to be replaced. Were talking about the biggest hyped phone in history. Did you all seriously think you could just walk in or log on to the website and find one with your name on it. Seriously ppl think before you speak (type)!!!

okay so what was with the BIG midnight launch, i wasnt able to make it into the city for the launch (which you had to register for days in advance anyway) but hey, thats okay because Optus stated on their website, sales will be available from midnight. So just before midnight, actually around 11.30pm i went online, the website was not even able to load up, eventually it got to midnight and i still wasnt able to load up the website, eventually at 1207 i was able to finally get an active page which stated "backorder only". So i called Optus, they told me that the online sales had been going for the past two hours ... WTF!! So, if they wanted a midnight launch and wanted to match it up with EST, then why the hell did the Optus stores here in Perth open at midnight?????? Clear case of misleading advertising - WA (wait a while - in this case, wait 11 weeks for perth deliveries. Optus you screwed up here.

It's an example of the contempt Apple have for their distribution partners. Optus Worlds and Yes Shops had an average of ten units each for launch. The Apple stores went hard all day with huge lines and still had stock, we are probably talking 1000 plus units each. Total BS!

i am soo angry with optus. i was soooo excited to get an iphone today. the day before i was advised that the store will be open at 9am, i rocked up at 8.45 and it was already open and they were only doing rain checks, ffs :@
