The Lumix DMC-FS7 is a competent little camera, sitting at the lower-end of Panasonic's compact camera line up. For all the other fancy bells and whistles other manufacturers are pulling out of their sleeves, it's refreshing to see a camera that doesn't sacrifice functionality and image quality for good looks. This camera replaces the FS3 and offers incremental updates.

Design

The FS7 goes head-to-head with other stylish offerings from Canon, such as the IXUS 95 IS, and Nikon, such as the Coolpix S220, though it beats them both in the design stakes. Available in sleek silver, black and pink, the FS7 screams understated simplicity. Its appearance is enough to make it stand out from the pack but not enough to make it conspicuous to attract the wrong sort of attention.

Strikingly similar in design to another Panasonic we recently tested, the FS15, the FS7 doesn't really differ at all in the style stakes. It's a more simplified version of that camera, with a four-way directional pad, menu buttons and playback switch situated next to the 2.7-inch LCD screen with 230,000 dots. At the top is the intelligent auto button, as well as the power switch, shutter button and zoom rocker.

Features

At the front sits a 33mm-132mm (or 4x optical zoom) lens, with little decoration apart from the Leica badge it wears proudly on the surrounds, and the image stabilisation denoted with "Mega OIS". Apart from the obvious scrawled on the front fascia, the FS7 it features a 10.1-megapixel sensor, and the usual gamut of controls like face detection and red-eye correction. The lens is f/2.8 at its widest aperture, which is nice to see on a camera of this class.

Shooting options are fairly limited: intelligent auto, program mode, night scenery, scene mode and video being the only options available. In program mode, ISO, exposure compensation and macro are available, whereas intelligent auto takes care of everything for you.

Performance and image quality

The FS7 starts up in a smidgen under two seconds which makes it about average for a camera of its class. Shot-to-shot time was relatively quick as well, and in burst mode, the camera took around 0.9 second per frame.

Overall, we were fairly impressed with the image quality that the FS7 delivered — results were remarkably similar to those seen on the FS15, exhibiting nice sharpness, natural colours and not too much saturation, though pinks were quite developed compared to other colours. For a full discussion of image quality, please see our review of the FS15.

Noise control was relatively satisfactory for a camera of its class, with noticeable grain appearing at ISO 800, and ISO 1600 being mostly unusable but for all the most non-critical shots.

The additional scene modes provided a bit of extra interest to standard shooting options, with film grain and pinhole effects being the most interesting to use.

Conclusion

For AU$389 we think the FS7 is a little overpriced for what it is, considering that for around AU$50 more you can pick up the FS15 with a wider angle lens and longer zoom. That said, if you pick up the FS7 you won't be disappointed — it's a great camera for someone who is not too fussy about specifications, and simply takes great pictures.

The Good:Does a good job with pictures, macro shots are great. Had mine since 2009, still using it today.

The Bad:Can't zoom when in video mode, can't pause recording a video.

Good reliable camera, great for beginner photographers.

The Good:cheap, decent pictures

The Bad:NO AUTO DATE/TIME Stamp

This camera DOES NOT HAVE an auto date OR Time Stamp. Bad tech support took almost 2 hours and being transferred to find this out, as all th reviews say its has the date/time stamp. . BUT GUESS WHAT -- NOT AUTO -- and if you apply it using the 'Text stamp' it will resize your picture and makes a duplicate picture.

The Bad:nothing that i can find

ive had this for about a week, paid $199. My work also bought 2. It is a great camera for everything i could need it for, friends, travel etc. Its REALLY light and quite thin, fits easily in a small purse. I really like it and recommend if you can get it cheap to buy it!!

Did a fair bit of reserach and settled on the FS7 when I got it for a great price. Takes great photos, battery life is respectable and its pretty easy to navigate. Love it!

The Good:Sharp, well-coloured images. Battery Life.

The Bad:The Intelligent Auto Function isn't actually that good.

I took well over 400 photos on the first charge, full image quality and at least a quarter of them with flash, which, needless to say is great battery life for a compact camera.

It has a very responsive shutter, and low start up time. not quite a DSLR, but much faster than most compacts. Now I'm always able to take those shots I used to miss because I had to whip out my camera and wait for it to start.
Time between shots is the same story.

The 3 modes of focus, face recognitions, central area and 9-zone pretty much encompass all the situations in which you'd use a compact digital and isn't lacking in anything. It's also fast and quiet.

The screen is great and has a high angle function which mainly just increases the brightness so there's less discoloured areas when veiwing from a low angle. It's clear and highly readable.

The intelligent auto function is not actually that functional, especially in low lit areas and will produce grainy, over exposed images in such situations. But if you steer clear and manually adjust the settings, it'll take beautiful images in the same situation.

The price was actually no problem for me, got it dirt cheap at AU$220 inclusive of Lowepro case and 4GB SDHC card.

The menus do take some getting used to but the quick menu button is great if you don't want to wade through the myriad of system settings in the camera in order to manually adjust the quality, exposure or ISO.

Video recording is OK. The video quality is great for a compact, but you can't zoom during recording. The audio is quite poor and sounding a bit empty, dominant in the 1k-4k range and severely lacking in anything below 300ish Hz and above 15KHz with a lot of handling noise.

But overall, this is a great camera for a compact digital for an everyday person.

The Good:Image sharpness, colours, lack of distortion, AE, AF, iA mode, image stablizer

The Bad:Fiddly tiny buttons (wish it was a bit bigger), inconsistent menu return options

It's a very good little auto camera but tricky to hold and operate comfortably with my fat fingers. The excellent results make it worthwhile persevering with awkward handling and zany menu navigation.

i've just had this for a few days, and i've tried out all the functions, and its very easy to use. the quality of the photos is nice, depicts true colour and absorbs light well. i really love the intelligent auto function, every photo is made better in terms of lighting, colour and focus. also comes in green, which is another reason why i love it so much. great job panasonic :)
