Panasonic readies 3D plasma display

Panasonic has developed a full-HD 3D plasma panel and high-precision active shutter glasses for the consumer market. The 50-inch prototype will be unveiled at the Ceatec Japan 2009 trade show next week.

The 50-inch prototype features a new, high-speed 3D drive and crosstalk reduction technology designed to maximise brightness and reduce image ghosting for rendering sharper three-dimensional pictures.

The complete Panasonic solution, dubbed the "3D Full HD Plasma Theatre System", comprises a 3D Blu-ray disc played back through a compatible player, plasma panel and shutter glasses. These components are designed based on a full-HD x2 frame-sequential video processing that displays alternate left- and right-eyed 3D images. The footage recorded from a Panasonic stereoscopic camera are then combined through the glasses.

With Panasonic's accelerated research in this field, it is hoping to launch its mass 3D products for the international market in the next year, subject to approval from the Blu-ray Disc Association.
