The successor to the A636, the new A639 comes with several enhancements. Among them, additional support for 802.11g wireless and Bluetooth V2.0.

Most notable is the upgrade to a 1GB memory (from the 128MB ROM on the A636), making the A639 one of the few Windows Mobile devices sporting the highest onboard storage capacity. Only the Palm LifeDrive offers more built-in memory among handhelds so far.

Design-wise, Asus has apparently stuck to similar dimensions as the elder sibling, with the A639 measuring 122mm by 73.2mm by 19.45mm and weighing 187 grams. A swivel patch GPS antenna supposedly offers better signal reception.

Also onboard are: A 3.5-inch QVGA TFT display, Intel XScale 416MHz processor, 1,300mAh removable/rechargeable Lithium-ion battery, and SD/MMC/SDIO card expansion slot.

Great unit but has a hardware fault.
Screen creeping out of alignment appears to be a big issue with Asus PDA's.

See ASUS forums http://vip.asus.com/forum/topic.aspx?board_id=6&model=MyPal+A639&SLanguage=en-us for more info.

Pros: Large Memory.

Cons: Screen Alignment Issues.

Been using PDA's for years now. Have this one for a few months now and can give an honest review.

Built-in GPS brings it up, while other issues brought it down.

Pros: 1 gig onboard is great. Speaker puts out acceptable volume (very important when using GPS in car). GPS itself works very well. Asus made bigger buttons on the touch panel so you could actually use your fingers for basic funtions instead of the stylus. Signal boots up at an acceptable rate (cold). Recovery of sat signal very quick.
WiFi with added Skype ( I sync'd my bluetooth earpiece) is a great feature. I've used this feature several times. Bluetooth works well (even though a little tricky to set up some devices). Battery life is acceptable.

Cons: Ok, here is what lowers the rating. I have to do a screen alignment at least 5 times a week. If not, I have to press the "s" key to get an "a". After the alignment, it's fine again for a day.
The processor is slower that it should be. Response to commands are sluggish. The unit cannot keep up to me. I often have to stop and wait a moment. My little HP I used to have (with much smaller processor) would run circles around this one. I was expecting allot more.
I definately use the windshield mount cradle for the car. It is great to put the power (12v) plug to the side rather than the bottom. Nothing mor annoying than a holder vibrating while driving. Having the the power to the side means I can touch down the unit to the dash which stabalizes it.
The big con is seating and removing the unit. Tricky to line up so that the port seats correctly. Allot of resistance removing the unit. Takes two hands to do it. One to hold cradle down and the other to pry the unit out. Not much of an issue? Remember you have to remove the unit from the dash everytime you leave the car. If you don't someone else will... hint hint.

The first stores are showing an "in stock" date of February 9th, 2007, so not long to wait now.
