Pentax K-m

By Leonard Goh on 09 July 2009

We like the K-m and the image quality it offers, but having to fumble over the inconsistent metering and white balance can be an issue for users not familiar with manual exposure controls.

    • Good: Great little camera
    • Bad: rear lcd needs to be recessed

I have had this camera six months now and am liking it. Once you learn all its functions you appreciate the camera is a workhorse.

I have shot about 1,000 pictures and still haven't had to change the batteries.

I don't mind the focussing noise, quite a few review have mentioned this, it is satisfying.

One review said to shoot in raw for best results, the internal electronics are probably a little limited.

Get a good polaroid filter and UV filter to protect lenses and give great shots.

The antishake mechanism works well most times, and is superior to Nikon.

To my mind it beats heavier and chunky digital slrs - who wants that inconvenience?

It doesn't quite hang in a balanced manner on the neck strap and I think the lcd screen could have been recessed so as to protect it from possible scratching when using the neck strap.

    • Good: Light, compact and a terrific step-up from my
    • Bad: Noisy focus but only noticable inside and software isn't as nice as Canon

After a number of years with Canon digitals, I picked up the K-m (body-only) in Singapore with a Sigma 18-200mm lense, primarily to let me take pics at air shows. The real attractions were image stabilisation in the body, CD cards and AA batteries all in one light and still a compact set-up even with the zoom lense. The SD card remains the real winner for me as our tv displays the pics as a slide show straight from the card. Back to the camera itself, its like my very old Olympus OM-1 35mm being light and compact. The right-side controls and one-handed grip are similar to my A710IS compact that has been everywhere but suffers from parallax viewfinder to lens mis-alignment on x6 zoom.
After just a month, the K-m has no vices that I have found and although reports note poor low light, I haven't needed this to date and I am happy with the move to Pentax, although the software isn't as nice as Canon.
