Photos: Diesels in Detroit

By Staff writers and Derek Fung on 16 January 2008

At the 2008 Detroit Auto Show, diesel cars grabbed their share of the limelight, as manufacturers prepare to import new diesel vehicles to the US. We check out what might be coming our way too.

With rising petrol prices and the current generation of diesel engines offering comparable performance to petrol-engined cars, but with much better mileage, it's little surprise that Australians bought more diesels last year than ever before. New technology on show from a number of manufacturers means diesel emissions are getting cleaner too.

Mercedes-Benz S300 Bluetec Hybrid
We previously saw this diesel hybrid at the 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show. It combines an economical 152kW 2.2-litre four-cylinder diesel engine with a small, 15kW electric motor for extra boost.

Mercedes currently imports a small selection of its diesel line-up into Australia, like the C220 CDI and E280 CDI. When the S300 hybrid goes into production in 2010, it could conceivably join the diesel-less Australian S-Class range.
