Photos: HTC Touch HD, we wish it was Android
By Joseph Hanlon on 03 November 2008
The T-Mobile G1 has sparked some controversy at CNET, around whether or not the hardware does Android justice — most of us think it doesn't. Yes, the G1 is practical and good if you like a mechanical QWERTY keypad, but where's the sexiness? Where are the iPhone-killing looks? Well, they're on HTC's next device, the HTC Touch HD.
Boasting a massive colour touchscreen that measures 50mm wide by 82mm tall, a slim design and all the features you'd expect from a modern smartphone — GPS, Wi-Fi and HSDPA — the Touch HD is a real beauty. Alas, Google and HTC aren't running Android on it — instead the Touch HD stumbles along on Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional.
If you're a business person, the thought of a Windows Mobile iPhone-a-like might get your blood pumping, but we want Android on it and we want it now. If you're reading this, Google, we ask — no, beg — you to get HTC to make something like this for you.

the main beef ppl has against Wce is the speed. Android is expected to be a heck of alot faster on the same hardware. that said - it's because android's missing a whole chunk of functionality that Wce (rather, WM6.1) offers which most ppl take for granted. WM6.1 is more mature because it's been around for ages, HUGEE online dev community dedicated to it and lots of software base (free and $), but ultimately, it was based on CE which was never intended for mobile phones and its hardware structure - therefore EVERYTHING goes thru the CPU (ie: SLOW!). Android on the other hand, lightweight, linux based, open-source and purpose built for its respective host device, will make far more efficient use of available hardware (ie: FAST!), but it's still a toddler. Give it time to grow and I'm sure Android will properly outrival WM9 or 10 or whatever it may be then. But by that time, I'd be using my TouchHD as a coaster and prolly have owned 4 other phones since. In closing - for now, it's great news that the Touch HD is on WM6. Ask me the same question a few years later, I may just say something different! =)

yep i agree, android blows and it is a heap of garbage when compared to windows ce, since windows ce has come a long way. also important to not that windows ce isn't as terrible as other windows OS's (ie like vista). ce is practically a different OS all together.

dean234,
yes linux is more reliable and secure, but i was pointing to the mobile operating system, the point is windoes ce has been in development several years longer than android... in terms of the layers built ontop of the kernals.
next time, try to understand what people are telling you instead of making unproductive counter arguments on a different tangent. -

bm3, next thing your going to say is that Windows is better than Linux. Android is Linux which by itself makes it very powerful. Do some research before you post useless comments plz.

windows mobile sh*ts all over android 10 times over. google should just stick to search and maps, not go trying to develop an operating system killer that has been in the works for 20 years (windows).

There's nothing wrong with Windows Mobile based PDA phones. I've used one for many years (HP-RW-6828, made by HTC) and apart from an occasional reboot, it works very well.
Window Mobile devices synchronise the best with Outlook, which for me means that I literally have my office in my pocket at all times. Although I have to carry a very small external Bluetooth GPS receiver to couple to the fantastic TomTom GPS software on my PDA phone, it works as well as the best standalone TomTom GPS unit.
Windows Mobile based PDA phones offer more facilities - tens of thousands of third-party programs, many of them free and the ability to play virtually any sort of audio and video, which makes the Apple iPhone look like the lame and limited piece of junk that it really is, when the hype is removed.
The HTC Touch HD has everything my HP PDA phone has and a hell of a lot more, including the built-in GPS receiver. Its screen is the best in the world. and it looks fantastic too. Why would anybody waste their money on an Apple iPhone and be locked into iTunes and limited Apple software, as well as lacking many facilities and can't even change the battery? Why buy a gPhone when you can get a Touch HD that eats it alive? I know what I'll be getting to replace my HP PDA phone. I can't wait to get my hands on the Touch HD. It's got EVERYTHING I need and more. -

"...instead the Touch HD stumbles along on Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional."
What an idiotic thing to say. Ifit ran android the video camera would not work, it would not have exchange activesync and it would have no onscreen keyboard (which is rather essential for a keyboard-less device).
When are you going to get it in your thick heads that Android is totally immature?
