What a thin box
After pulling the Macbook Pro out of the outer packaging and removing four styrofoam protectors, the inner box measures around 8.5cm thick.

Hiding underneath
Software discs and manuals are packaged under the MacBook. We've got to admit, this Cupertino-based company does have quite a knack for design.

So what's in there?
Starting from the Macbook Pro (that's the silver slab in the top-right corner), there's a DVI-to-VGA converter, remote control, power adapter, Australian power plug and extension cord. Mac OS X installation discs and manuals come packaged in the black box.

Down in front
Apple supplies a remote control in the box that can be used to access Front Row software on the MacBook Pro. The receiver is the small black dot to the left of the latch.

Looks almost the same as its predecessor
The chassis of the Macbook Pro is almost identical to the 15-inch PowerBook G4, although the new Intel-based notebook is slightly thinner and wider.

Ambient lighting
Like the PowerBook, the MacBook Pro has a backlit keyboard and an ambient light sensor onboard automatically adjusts the brightness to suit the environment.

Down the left side
On the left side of the MacBook Pro is the MagSafe power adapter port, a USB port, digital audio input/output and headphone jack. The microphone is hidden under the speaker grille on the left.

More ports on the right
On the right of the MacBook Pro is the second USB port, FireWire 400, 10/100/1000BASE-T Gigabit Ethernet connector and DVI output.

MagSafe power cord
On the left side of the MacBook Pro is a new magnetic power adapter port that prevents the notebook from going flying across the room if someone accidentally trips up on the cord.

Brighter screen?
We haven't put it head-to-head with a PowerBook yet, but reports suggest that the MacBook Pro sports a much brighter display.
