  • Good: Great battery life • Good ergonomics
  • Bad: No noise-cancelling • Lots of small parts
  • Specs: Headset • See more specifications
  • RRP: AU$199.00

Plantronics' Discovery 640 is a great bluetooth headset: light and comfortable, with long battery life. The small unit weighs in at 9g and even ships with three different ear gels so you can be assured of a snug fit, though like other "hookless" designs, we don't recommend jogging with it.

Pairing is straightforward, and the Discovery 640 is compatible with every Bluetooth-equipped phone on the market.

The device doesn't include noise-cancelling features or automatic volume adjustment, but we had no problems holding conversations in busy areas like underground railway stations. There's a positive of not including noise-cancelling technology, too: enhanced battery life.

The Discovery provides 5 hours of operation on a single charge, which should see you through a couple of days of heavy use between refills. The pack includes an AC charger, a collection of fittings that enable you to use a mobile phone adaptor, and on the road using a AAA cell. All these extras are provided in a small carry case, making the Plantronics kit ideal for a traveller.

A pocket holster that vibrates to alert you to incoming calls rounds out the feature set, making the Plantronics unit a good choice for anyone that spends a lot of time making mobile calls each day.

    • Good: Excellent. Love it.
    • Bad: Doesn't work with a Uniden Elite 8855 bluetooth cordless phone but I suspect this is a problem with Uniden rather than plantronics.

Great product. Very simple to use. Flexible with connections. Love the ability to re-charge with AAA battery. Carry case keeps everything together, probably more suitable for a girl's handbag than a man's pocket.

    • Good: Nice. No screen problems so far like a lot of the exterior small screens on flip phones.
    • Bad: Awful customization of menus, background, and speakers could be louder.

You can't use it with a Samsung sgh-t509 (candy bar flat phone)

    blackberry 8700

You can't use it with a Blackberry 8700, only with 7xx series. Pity nowhere in the specs indicates so.

    • Good: Great for people with glasses
      Good Sound
    • Bad: In packet got two of the same charging plugs. Retailer told me to speak to the Plantronics' Support as the case was sealed. Plantronic Support told me to speak to retailer. This went on for over a month with no resolution.

    Good Earpiece - Hopeless Support

Beware, there are two different versions of this product. The website has an operating manual for the latest version but the product I got was old stock of the same product with different features. Blackberry adapter is included in the packing list of the manual on the website but this adapter was not in the printed manual I got with the product.
