PlayStation 3 80GB release date, pricing

By CNET staff on 16 August 2008

Sony Computer Entertainment Australia has announced that the new PlayStation 3 80GB model will be released on the 28th August 2008, replacing the current 40GB version.

The 80GB model will ship with a DUALSHOCK controller.

The new model was announced at E3 in July, and offers the same features and functionality of the 40GB model, but with double the storage capacity and the new DUALSHOCK 3 Wireless Controller.

The Australian pricing on the 80GB PS3 will remain the same as the outgoing model at AU$699.

The DUALSHOCK 3 controller replaces the existing controller and includes SIXAXIS motion sensing technology and in-built rumble.

"Having achieved an install base of over 350,000 consoles to date, the PS3 has already found its place in many Australian homes," said Michael Ephraim, managing director of Sony Computer Entertainment Australia.

"With more compelling content being made available to PS3 owners every week through the PLAYSTATION Network, the extra storage offered in this new model will prove invaluable," Ephraim said.

"In addition, the 80GB memory allows you consolidate all of your digital music, photos and movies in one central place within the home and experience them on a high definition TV. Add to this the ability to enjoy Blu-ray movies and games and it's clear why the PS3 has earned its place as the leading entertainment hub in today's home," he said.

We want to buy PS3 for our grandson but have been told we need a particular type of TV. Is this so?
    Thanks Katie

Just bought the 80GB and then found out about the lack of backwards compatability when I got home. I asked around at work and a friend told me he had played a heap of non BD disks/games on his PS3 and his laser reader crapped out. Took it back under warranty and they replaced the PS3 totally. Apparetnly, the SOny tech said its happening alot to people who play non BD discs on the PS3

I agree, bring on the backwards compatability and then it will be worth buying or bring out a way to have old favourites converted to a new playable format so us oldies can play on!!

in regards to the HDD capacity, I'm in agreement with everyone else. Buy the unit, then buy a HDD, the installation isn't difficult that I've noticed. A few screws and boom, you're a away.

And anyone who keeps all their movies on this unit is clearly mad. Better setup: a media box or media server. Stream it over gigabit lan.

Not only did the 60gig version play old ps games but had the memory card readers, SACD support and a crome trim. if you want a ps3 with bigger hdd space, best is to buy 40gig model then buy a bigger 2.5" hdd as dean said(preferably over 250gig). 80gig is alright but games install files on the console some over 1gig, then you put your movies, photos and music on and then your looking at about 50gig+. Soon playstation is releasing a twin HD digital tv tuner which plugs into ps3 and you can record HD digital tv shows straight onto hdd (i am guessing would be large files) so you will then need lots of hdd space. But then again the choice is yours

rengwerda: The 80GB will be the same price as the older 40GB, plus it comes with dual-shock. But just talking about capacity, even 80Gb is paltry... most places sell 160GB 2.5" drives for about $15 more than the 80GB version -- and you can't even get 40GB drives anymore!! To say that 80GB "allows you consolidate all of your digital music, photos and movies in one central place" is totally laughable! 80GB might hold my photos, but not much more...

y not just get the 40gb, and buy yourself a HDD its just a notebook HDD anyway. !!!
    upgrade yourself.

I was under the impression that the 60GB PS3 did upscaling on PS2 games, so you could play a PS2 game in HD. There's technically no reason why Sony couldn't have done that (except for the fact that they want us to buy PS3 games, but that's not a technical reason...) It sucks that you still can't do it.

I haven't played a PS2 game in years. Nobody needs backwards compatibility....go and buy a PS2 for $100 if you want to play old games.
