An official patch was released for PlayTV, according to a source, that specifically states "Support for Australian Digital TV".

It's no secret that Sony has been teasing Aussies with a 2009 release date for PlayTV, but the company has always remained quiet when it comes to specifics about bringing the PVR add-on down under.
Keen tech enthusiasts who have imported PlayTV into Australia, however, noticed an interesting update on the weekend, with a patch released that included support for previously unsupported channels like SBS, SBS HD, Parliament, and others.
A spokesperson for Sony Computer Entertainment Australia told GameSpot AU that it is "still tracking a 2009 launch for PlayTV in Australia and will keep you updated on any official announcements regarding the launch timing."
It's fair to say that from a technical standpoint, PlayTV is all ready to go in Australia. GameSpot AU has confirmed the validity of the attached screenshot and that all Australian digital TV channels (including the ever-so-exciting Parliament and Senate channels) are now working fine on imported PlayTV units. However, trying to work out a release date is a different story. One Australian video games retailer has it dated for release on 1 November. The end of 2009 is less than nine weeks away now, so either way, it's safe to say it will be out soon.

@GT 2/11.Thanks for the update. It makes it a bit more user friendly i guess.Perhaps next model will do 2 shows at once and have an RF loop , but its still cheaper than a Genuine Pvr , not the same but.Had in mind a panaphonics DVD recorder , too bloody pricey.

@colster. The PS3 does not need to be on all the time. Obviously when you are watching it, but for recordings the PS3 will automatically turn itself on to record and shut down when finished. And Yes... only record 1 show at a time :(, but can watch other channels, previous recordings or DVD's while recording.

EB states that Play contains two tuners so you can record one station whilst watching another

Unsure about this now following my previous comment.I believe this has no RF loop through so your PS3 will always be on.You can get a splitter but thats not the issue.Thats a negative for me.Perhaps the next model will have this and Most Importantly record 2 channels at once.

Any idea if South Africans should also ride on the same hope and expect the waiting not to be much longer? I think it is one add-on that makes PS3 more of a family gadget than a male's.
