Poll: Has the 3G-capable iPhone killed the GPS as we know it?
By Bonnie Cha on 10 June 2008
Just two months ago I questioned the rush to add GPS navigation to mobile phones and smartphones. Now I've had a change of heart and not just because of Steve's new iPhone 3G.

If the GPS people had lowered their prices to something reasonable years ago, then they would be happy that they had their share of the market for a short time and capitalised then. They've really missed the boat, with all these mobiles coming out with GPS and at a fraction of the price (considering they're going to buy a mobile anyway). Can't feel sorry for them really. Their own fault.

what is the matter with a normal map? especially if you only venture out once in a while? Yes the iphone will affect the PND industry but so will other mobile/cell phones too. I just wonder what happens when there is a solar flare/storm and the GPS system goes down just when you need it.

I dont understand how you could write an article discussing how "there's no way smartphones and mobile phones with integrated GPS would take over the portable navigation device (PND) space" if you've never actually used one. Credibility shot in my opinion!

It is game changing.
Imagine the possibilities of having not just having a GPS device, but using its location finding abilities and plugging that into 3rd party applications!
Apple already demoed loopt where the GPS in the iphone will communicate with a central server and will let you know if your friends are around with in a 10km radius. That is insane and shows the possibility that an amazing development platform backed up with fantastic hardware will deliver.
It is exciting times, as David Pogue said 'there is now Windows, Mac, and the iPhone...' its just that big!
