Poll: Has your iPhone done this?

By Joseph Hanlon on 16 September 2009

Unlike our previous poll regarding what to do if you drop your phone in the loo, this time we're not really asking for advice: this iPhone 3G has had it.

What we would like to know is if you've seen anything like it, with your iPhone or with any other large screen handheld devices you might have owned. We've heard there may have been similar issues occurring with previous generations of iPods.

For the record, this iPhone, owned by one particularly glum member of the CBS Interactive team, hasn't suffered any physical trauma, and has been through a rigorous troubleshooting routine including hard resets and firmware updates, all to no avail.

Interestingly, part of the iPhone is still working. While all incoming calls are being diverted, the phone is automatically connecting to a previously paired Bluetooth connection in the owner's car and is still capable of making outgoing phone calls.

All that's left to do now for our brother in arms is to take the recently out-of-warranty iPhone back to Optus and throw himself on the company's mercy. Though surely with such an obvious malfunction in the hardware, Optus will just replace the phone without a fuss, right? We'll update you as soon as we know ourselves.

Update: After a quick response from Apple and Optus, the problem has been resolved with a replacement, despite the handset being out of warranty as reported. In case you suffer similar woes at home, it seems the problem boiled down to a dodgy screen connector.

@ HanaC - partly tru. If you break it then your stuffed. If it fails though they are. Regardless of what the contract says, its not legal. Thats why I said if the telcos will point that out to you, take it further with the consumer comission. They want to prove it in court and thus far no telco has been willing.

@ "warranty"... your telco is NOT obligated to fix the phone if it is out of the manufacturer warranty, or if it breaches the warranty terms (i.e. physical damage). this is clearly set out in your mobile contract if you're actually willing to read the small print. once you sign it, you are agreeing to those terms so you can't pop in later on and say "you never told me that".

I would consider takling it up with the consumer watchdogs. If your phone is still under its plan but out of warranty they have an obligation to fix it. Thats because your contract covers the phone + calls + data. If the phone dies they are honour bound to fix or replace it because that is what the contract covers. I understand that telcos will tell you to get lost, but the Consumer Comission is itching to prove this law in court. To date no telco has pushed it that far.

Keep digging - you'll find many many examples of iPhones that have stopped working altogether and users being told by Telco's that it's Apples fault and Apple swearing it's not an issue and it must be the Telco.
Dud battery's are a prime example, some functions not working even after numerous hard resets and firmware flashes.

I'd suggest if you weren't part of the media you would be prompted to pay for a new one.

As the saying goes its not what you know its who you know. I wish id seen this report 3months ago I had the exact same problem with my iphone and 3 told me they cant do a thing for me, they tried to tell me i must of dropped it or it has suffered a hard knock (this wasnt the case) they told me seen it was out of warranty they could either send it away to be fixed (big dollars) or buy another outright. If only i was working at cnet......... damn
