A great way to use your favourite digital photos is to make a photo greeting card to send to your friends and family.
In this quick tutorial, we will be using:
- Microsoft Word (v 2000 or later)
- Web browser
We recommend the following hardware:
- Colour printer
- Photo paper or high quality paper blank on both sides
Step 1: Download the template
To download the template for the card, visit
this Web site. Click the
Downlaod now button to download the template into Microsoft Word. If you get an error message while downloading, follow the directions to "download manually".
Step 2: Add your photo to a new document
To add your own photo, create a new Word document. Choose the Insert menu, choose Picture and then From File.... Locate and select the photo to use, and click Insert.
Step 3: Rotate and copy the photo
Click the photo to select it, then click the Rotate Left 90° icon twice to flip the photo upside down. Click the Edit menu and click Copy.
Step 4: Paste it into the template
Switch to the photo card template. Click on the existing photo to display the sizing handles around it. Right lick and choose Paste from the menu. Don't worry if the photo doesn't look correct at this stage.
Step 5: Adjust your photo in the template
Click on your photo to display the sizing handles around it. Then, click on the text wrapping icon and select the In Front of Text option. Then drag the image so that it appears in the centre of the frame.
Step 6: Size and crop to fit
Drag on the sizing handles to size the photo to fit the window in the card. Click the Crop icon on the Picture toolbar and drag to remove excess parts of the image so it fits just right.
Step 7: Add your message
Locate the text on the card, click it and replace with your own text. Use the format options to set the font face, text size and colour.
Step 8: Save and print
Choose the File menu and click Save to save your project. Load the paper in the printer. Choose the File menu, click Print and click OK to print the card. Fold in half and then in half again.

I cannot tell from the website if the card created as described is a folded greeting card with e.g. a photo on the front side and text on the other visble when the photo is folded back. Please clarify.

Nice ideas! Too bad Microsoft won't let Mac users download the templates.
