Italian projector specialist SIM2 has announced a slew of new projectors -- including the company's first "budget" model -- which incorporate several groundbreaking features.

The Domino D10 is SIM2's most affordable model yet.

One of the newest innovations is the Unishape lamp which can change its light output dynamically within milliseconds. This increases contrast in dark scenes and is much more seamless than the mechanical iris used on other projectors.

The new baby of the range is the SIM2 Domino D10 (AU$3,999) and features a 1,280 x 768 resolution, HDMI input, Texas Instrument's latest 0.65-inch DLP chipset, and Brilliant Colour image enhancement.

Meanwhile, the big daddy of the range is the C3X 1080 which is a full 1080p projector and is the first to include the new DarkChip4 processor. This processor, in combination with several other technologies, means that the "rainbow effect" associated with DLP has been eliminated.

ISF professional Aaron Rigg calibrated the C3X 1080 in advance of the launch and was excited about what he saw: "This projector has the best colour reproduction I've seen on any projector, and I've seen projectors up to quarter of a million dollars."

The CSX 1080 comes in four different colours and is available for AU$44,999.

Other new projectors in the range include the 1080p Domino 80E with Unishape lamp (AU$11,999) and the HT3000 HOST modular projector (from AU$29,999) with an outboard video processor and transmission distances up to 250 metres.

The InFocus IN83 works beautifully out of the box, delivering smooth, rich pictures. That said, it fails to sizzle, plagued by a mild black crush despite a new DarkChip4 engine.

Sim2's first foray into the entry level projector space isn't exactly cheap, or for that matter pretty. But the Domino D10 looks great where it really counts.
