Sony has very quietly announced a fix to the issue with firmware upgrade 3.41 that caused system crashes when attempting to upgrade the console's hard drive.

Said SCEE blog manager James Gallagher on the PS3 blog, "We are aware of the symptoms with the system software update 3.41, released on July 27, and that it will cause the update to stop in some occasions while replacing the PlayStation 3 (PS3) hard disk drive (HDD) if the PS3 system is installed with version 3.41."

Sony has re-released the software update, he said. "If you are experiencing such symptoms when replacing the HDD of your PS3 system, we kindly ask you to use the latest data and try again. We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused, and appreciate your understanding and continued support."

You can download the update from Sony's PS3 download centre.

Has anyone attempted this fix? How did it turn out?

Hi Help,

In order for your PS3 to locate the update, you need to save it to a very specific file location.

First, create a folder on your thumb drive called PS3. Inside that folder, create another folder called UPDATE (make sure both of these are in upper case letters). Finally, save the PS3UPDAT.PUP file into the UPDATE folder.

I fist saw CNet coverage of this last night, and followed the link to the 3.40 update to froestall problems.
However, when I shoved the USB drive with the 3.40 update into my PS3 it would not install. I think it said there was no suitable update. I have no idea if this was a location issue, or what.
So, I bit the bullet and let my PS3 download 3.41 directly (over 3.30) via the Internet and it all worked fine for me.
My PS3 is a little under a year old, and was a bundled offer, one of first with 250GB drive.
It boots, but I haven't tried any games or movies.
