Remember that rumoured February iPad 3 event? Make it March

The questionable rumour that Apple planned to hold a special iPad 3-related event this month has been amended by its source, who now says that said event is taking place in March instead.

Japanese Apple blog Macotakara clarified its original report saying that the "special event" it heard about from an "Asian supplier and a source from the United States" that would bring the official unveiling of the iPad 3 is actually taking place next month.

The site added that Apple was still going to have a "strange" event sometime this month, without adding details to what product or service it may be related to, or why it was an oddity.

Jim Dalrymple at The Loop has since weighed in, saying Apple's not holding any kind of event in February.

The iPad 2 made its debut at a special event in downtown San Francisco on 2 March, going on sale a week and a half later. Macotakara originally suggested that a similar delay between an introduction and launch would happen with Apple's next model, though would be a bit longer given a production slowdown due to the Chinese New Year.

Apple's next iPad — which many assume will be called the iPad 3 — is rumoured to bring a handful of improvements over the existing model. So far that murmuring has pointed to a higher resolution display, with more recent reports suggesting a move to a quad-core chip and compatibility with 4G long-term evolution (LTE) cellular networks.

Other rumours have suggested whatever device Apple rolls out next will be similar in form to what it did with the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4S, where there are simply improvements on an existing hardware model. You can catch up on those and other whispers on our iPad 3 rumour round-up.

I suppose if enough people say they heard it will be released in 'x' month, then at least one of them will have to be right. Same goes for specs and upgrades.
