Samsung S2 Pebble

By Irene Mickaiel on 14 August 2008

It's an ideal MP3 player for the younger generation, yet cute enough to be a viable option for anyone who wants a cheap, no-fuss MP3 player.

Design
The Samsung Pebble is exactly what the name says it is: a pebble. Available in three colours (black, purple and red), it's a small, round and glossy stone that fits perfectly in the palm of your hand, measuring 41x42x17mm and weighing 17g. Its glossy surface is prone to fingerprint smudges, but isn't that noticeable.

Similar to Creative's Zen Stone in design and features, the Pebble is lighter, smaller, double the storage capacity and almost half its price at AU$49 as opposed to AU$89.95.

Designed to be worn around the neck like a pendant (or amulet if you see music as a way to ward off boredom) it has a small LED under its surface that blinks different coloured lights when it's playing music. It also acts as a status light when hooked up to a PC, turning blue when it's charging, red when transferring files, and green when it's fully charged.

There is no screen for displaying track info or other options, instead when you turn over the Pebble there are six tactile buttons — play/pause, fast forward, rewind, volume up and down, and the Smart button. Play/pause also doubles as the on/off switch, and volume up and down can be used to add or remove a song from a playlist.

The Smart button does two things: it allows you to select the play mode (Repeat All, Shuffle, and Playlist, all assigned different colours by the LED) and also accesses Samsung's DNSe (Digital Natural Sound engine) technology, which simulates three acoustic environments: Normal, Studio, and Concert Hall.

Features
The Pebble only comes with 2GB internal memory without the option of expanding, so the device will only hold around 380 songs, depending on the bit-rate.

The supplied earphones come in the form of a lanyard-styled cord from which hangs the Pebble, attached via a retention clip to prevent it from being accidentally yanked off. The audio cords are connected to the lanyard via a pair of beads, which are adjustable, allowing you to either adjust the length of cord required for comfortable listening, or to sit the ear buds flush with the cord down by the neck piece in order to tuck them away, making it appear like a normal necklace.

Given its size, the S2 Pebble doesn't have room to bundle in an FM tuner, an AC adapter, or as mentioned previously, an LCD screen — but those looking for a simple player will likely be more than happy with the functionality.

Performance
The Pebble is rated for 13 hours of playback, but in testing only lasted nine hours of continuous use and took two hours to fully recharge. As such it'll take you through most of your working day, but if you're planning on listening to non-stop music for an entire weekend, then you'll have to have a PC at hand to recharge the device.

The USB adapter makes it easy to hook up to a PC: simply plug it in, drag-and-drop your MP3, OGG or WMA files and away you go. When listening to music, it sounded a bit tinny and hollow, but it's acceptable for an entry-level player.

While the lanyard is a clever design, the only pocket the Pebble will reach is your shirt pocket, so if you were to exercise while listening to music you'll have to get used to it thumping against your sternum and wildly swinging around your neck. There is the option of inserting a string into the supplied hole beside the 3.5mm headphone port if you prefer to use a longer lanyard, however, you'll have to replace the headphones if you do this.

Overall, the S2 Pebble is aptly named as it looks exactly like, well, a pebble. It's an ideal MP3 player for the younger generation, yet cute enough to be a viable option for anyone who wants an affordable, no-fuss MP3 player.

    • Good: Good sound, small , CHEAP
    • Bad: Battery is not so good, no screen

Great for something this small. I got this mp3 because I was o n a budget and didnt want to spend a fortune on a luxury mp3. Good sound and fits great. However its battery is a bit confusing. As it doesnt show how much battery life is left. However thats not the bad part, it constantly dies on me. it sometimes just doesnt open.

    • Good: small, lightweigh, very cheap
    • Bad: misleading battery life

There is no battery indicator, bad for me as I used to wonder why it died halfway through a day. Now have to charge it everynight, which is bad as it could only be half charged and i want to get the best i can out of my batteries. Other than that, the best mp3 player ive ever owned.

    • Good: Size, size, size, price, price, price
    • Bad: Nothing, considering the price

At 2gb per pebble, I bought several. Then loaded different styles of music (from a fairly large collection) onto each. Set to "shuffle" and away you go. Terrific in car - just plug into the Aux socket.

    • Good: CHEAP, Small, light-weight
    • Bad: Can't see songs

It may have started at around $30, but now you can get it for $19.99 at any local Best Buy (Def. check Best Buy, it's about $35 anywhere else). I love my Pebble! I'll sacrifice being able to see my songs and artists anyday. Also, when I had my nice iPod, I was constantly stressing about leaving it somewhere or having it suffer scratches and cracks. Now, if I do lose it, someone steals it, etc., I can just go out and by another. I can't say enough about how much I love this Pebble.

    • Good: lanyard, user freindly, light on extra softeware
    • Bad: cant see songs choice

I love the pebble. I throw it on in the car, I walk with it, run with it, garden with it.
After previously slicing through perhaps four or more headsets (tin snips, knives, pruning shears), I love the lanyard, that prevents it from swinging loose. I love that I dont need to use another program to transfer files to it. i just point, pick and throw over my music. Brilliant

    • Good: Drag and drop music. Doesn't get any better than this.
Extra points for price entry point
    • Bad: I have to rename folders with numbers if I want music played in that order. Fiddly but a good workaround

You could pick this up for less than $50.

    • Good: -Looks
      -Sound quality
      -Controls
      -Price
      -Light
    • Bad: -At first can be a bit tricky to use

The looks of it was the main reason why I chose this over the Zen Stone, which would have also been a good alternative. It's really nice to hold and easy to use the buttons. The sound quality is quite good for something this small, and the 2GB space is ample. The main thing that some people might not like is that it's a bit tricky to use the controls, seeing that it has no screen so that it's sometimes a bit hard to figure out what settings you're on, but it does make a little beep noise when you change something. Personally I don't have a problem with it though, it's alright when you get used to it. The DNSe setting controlled by the Smart Button are a bit useless, one that equalises the sounds and another that makes it sound like you're in a tunnel. So I just forget about them.
The play settings are playlist, shuffle, and custom playlist, which are all good. And the way to put music on is a lot better than iTunes, it's just drag and drop like it's a normal USB. Actually you CAN use it as a USB if you feel like it.
Overall it's a cheap, simple, easy to use MP3 player, and I'm very glad I bought it.

    • Good: user-friendly, light and good audio quality
    • Bad: not so keen on the earphones

The shape of the MP3 player is the first thing that caught my attention. It's so shiny, small and light. The sound quality is quite good for such a simple device. The control panel on its back is very user-friendly. And the blinking indicator light at the bottom of the device is simply mesmerizing..while using it in a dark room, you do get the feeling of operating something that's out of this world. The only thing that i don't really like is the set of earphones that come with it. I feel that it is too feminine for my taste...i couldn't imagine any guys out there would be comfortable wearing it on their neck. But then again, maybe this is Samsung's intention from the start, that is, to target women with this MP3 player
