In brief

The WB2000 was announced overseas a while back, and has only just now made it to Australian shores. This is an advanced compact camera that features a 10-megapixel backside-illuminated CMOS sensor and a number of other features that may entice photographers to the Samsung fold, including full 1080p HD video recording and a burst mode that can capture 10 frames per second.

This camera can also capture images in RAW format and uses a 3-inch AMOLED display just like the Samsung NX10. Lens-wise, it's a 24mm wide-angle that extends to 5x optical zoom. The WB2000 has the added bonus of being able to capture still images at the same time as recording video, and can also shoot movies at 1000 frames per second for slow-motion clips.

The WB2000 will be available in July for AU$449. Expect our full review soon.

The Good:The idea of the ultimate compact of the average user

The Bad:Samsung sells this camera with BIG expectations but very poor implementation

The people this camera is aimed at will be disappointed.
I purchased this camera and returned it the next day.
Admittedly there was a software fault that was freezing up certain things, i dont believe it caused the rest of the issues below but correct me if im wrong.

Full HD video - BLAH AT BEST. This would be great and one of the reasons we got it, just having a baby we thought this would come in handy for the first steps etc.
What Samsung doesnt tell you is you can zoom while recording, but if you actually want to playback all you will hear is the zoom motor as you zoom in and out. You have the option to turn the sound off when you do zoom but really whats the point, Full HD silent movie??? hmmm

10 fps, again another thing i wanted, and at full 10mpx res. Again Samsung forget to tell you that this is only available in certain manual modes. The users this is aimed at don't want to risk missing a shot because they were in the wrong mode, Pretty annoying as again this is another major selling point Samsung is yelling about with this camera.

1000fps video, didn't really play to much with this, buit the playback i saw, in camera playback, the resolution seemed extremely low and i would suggest pretty useless.

The screen was nice and bright and about the only thing Samsung has done correctly.

Low light performance was pretty average and the flash is as you would expect on a compact, underpowered but no different to most of the other on the market.

RAW files was a huge bonus and something I HAD to have, but at time of writing the only software that would convert them was supplied in the box. Dont bother with photoshop/lightroom etc it wont recognise the format.
How many damn RAW formats do we need, come on, every camera that comes out has a different verison of the same RAW format, each only compatible with the supplied software until Adobe etc adds support. I think its time the camera companies pulled their head in and decided on a standard RAW file format.

I am a professional photographer and i wasn't expecting this to be of DSLR quality, we purchased this as a "bridging" camera for my wife, the ability to put it in auto and take advantage of all the features i.e. FULL HD, 10fps etc, and then the option to "learn" the advanced manual photography settings over time.
This unfortunatly wasn't the case and the people this camera is aimed at will be pretty disappointed i would imagine.

Again i admit there was a software fault in the model i received but i highly doubt this cause any other problems but correct me if wrong.

Purchase this camera at your own risk if you want to see if you can fit your photography around this camera, not the other way around like it should be. The camera should work for you, not you work into what the camera will let you do.

I suggest if you purchase this model check the stores refund policy ad make sure you can get a refund when you return it as you are unhappy.

I would just buy the NX10 you can get $100 cash back for August if you look around you can get it for approx $600 after cash back, and it has a pretty good auto mode aswell as the full manual control.

I have long been a fan of Samsung, they have always offered you more for your money than most of the others. Samsung has gone way overboard on the sales pitch with this camera, and the lack of performace may turn a few long time Samsung fans.

Let's just hope it has great image quality. And oh - didn't the Canon ixus 300 HS have similar specs? hmm.. is this a ploy by samsung to entice buyers away from Canon by releasing cameras that match every single one of Canon's line-up?

Canon 300HS has a brighter lens (starts at f2.0).On the other hand, WB2000 captures true HD 1080p video MP4 (H.264). It also does RAW. I suspect Canon may have a better photo capture while WB2000 may have a better video capture. I look forward to seeing some samples from both.

Had this camera for all of 6 hours and returned it. Ok there was a software fault so it would freeze, not the reason for the below average review though.
The ability to take Full HD movies was a major selling point as we have just had a baby, Full HD movies, when you zoom you hear the zoom on playback, or you can turn the sound off when zooming, not much point really, so the FUll HD movies are pretty useless unless you dont mind not zooming.
The burst mode is only available in the manual modes, as a "bridging" camera between DSLR and compact i would expect this to be available in all modes, specially seeing as its a major selling point.
Very noisy in low light and flash is as you would expect on a compact.
The raw images are a big selling point for me but again the only way to convert at time of this review was with supplied software, abode etc can't.
I am a professional photographer but i didn't expect this camera to be of DSLR quality, but the selling points that samsung are highlighting really are of not use really

Full HD movies but without the zoom, Yes its a camera first, video camera second but still if you are going to sell Full HD capablity get it right.

Burst mode only in manual settings, not much good for the average user who doesn't want to risk missing a shot because they stuffed up the settings.

1000fps seemed to be in extremely low res to the point of being pretty useless, Correct me if im wrong i didnt play to much with this.

Raw, Come on how many different RAW versions do we need, each maker and each camera brings in a new version. Make a Standard RAW format and stick to it.

Software problem aside. it is a 3 star camera, if the software problem effected the issues i have outlined correct me, but i have doubts it is.

If the camera did everything well it would be the ultimate compact but it does pretty much it all at 50% not what i would expect from Samsung, I have been a fan of Samsung for a long time and would expect more.

The people this camera is aimed at, average users with average camera setting knowledge, who want Full HD movies and burst mode etc i suspect may be disappointed.

But again it may have been this one i got with dodgey software but risk purchasing at your own expense, and make sure you can get a refund when you return it.
