Samsung X820: World's thinnest phone
By Jeremy Roche on 11 May 2006
Samsung has announced the first of its upcoming line of ultra-thin phones, a tri-band GSM handset with a profile that's only 6.9mm thick. With a case made out of some kind of "fibreglass-infused plastic", the X820 also weighs in at a mere 66g.
Although über-thin, the X820 comes with a fully-fledged feature set, including a 2-megapixel camera, music player (MP3 / AAC / WMA) and video recording (MPEG4 / H.263).
Samsung tells us the phone sports a 1.9-inch (4.8cm), 262K colour display with a resolution of 176 x 220 pixels. There's also a document viewer which, if it's the same as found on the D600, supports Microsoft Office documents, JPEG images, text, HTML and PDF files. Like the D600, the X820 has a TV-output port, which we hope Samsung has improved upon in this model -- the low resolution output of the earlier model was awful when viewed on a TV screen or projector.
Although we couldn't pin Samsung down on an exact release date, the X820 is likely to be released in Australia between July and September. It will first be released in Russia this month, with Europe to follow soon after.

Greg, that sound like physical damage to me. Phones don't just break by themselves. I work in a mobile phone shop and the number of people that claim that it's impossible that they dropped the phone or sat on it or put pressure on it in their pocket is amazing. The only way that it would have cracked is if you put significant pressure on it. Obviously Samsung will tell you that the warranty is void because it doesnt cover physical damage......

I've had my X820 for 10 months and even though they say it is tough, just having it in my pocket. I work in an office, the phone has cracked along the centreline just below the camera. Samsung Australia dont want to know me. If someone from Samsung would like to help that would be great, as it is a design fault.
