Samsung YH-J70

While Apple went out for minimal features in order to keep its iPods looking zen (no offence, Creative), Samsung, like most Korean companies, prefers to play it by the numbers (of features).

Editor's note: The Samsung YH-J70 series is available in two models: YH-J70S (20GB, AU$499) and YH-J70L (30GB, AU$579).

While Apple went out for minimal features in order to keep its iPods looking zen (no offence, Creative), Samsung, like most Korean companies, prefers to play it by the numbers (of features). Though it's a force to be reckoned with in the MP3 player market with its status as the largest flash memory manufacturer, as well as a stated resolve to unseat the iPod from its top dog position, Samsung still has some way to go before it can emulate the universal appeal of the iPod.

Upside
Yet even without the aesthetics of the scroll-wheeled one, the YP-J70 packs in quite a full feature list that would impress most users. Besides the classic MP3 player basics, Samsung has taken pains to imbue the YP-J70 with extra goodies like video playback, USB hosting, a brilliant 1.8-inch display and a rated 25 hours of battery life which is pretty good given it's a hard drive player.

The smooth finish of the plastic outer body is very comfortable to the touch. However, that also means it is vunerable to scratches. Sounds rather like the iPod, doesn't it? Yet the resemblance in aesthetics ends there. Without a Click Wheel, the YP-J70 relies on three buttons located beneath the screen to handle most of the navigation; left, right and an up/down clickable scroll. The very audible clunk sound on the scroll key is certainly very satisfying, but we feel there's a distinct possibility it may turn flimsy in the long run.

There's a Menu and Play button which doubles as the power on/off switch. We like the Tool key as it opens contextually relevant functions for the mode that the unit is in -- ie Equalizers in Play mode, Add to Play List in Music mode -- sort of like a shortcut menu, which beats digging into the main menu itself.

There is a nice mix of five different puzzle games, though unlike the YP-T8, none of them uses motion-detection controls.

Downside
Recently, Samsung seems to be fairly committed to motion-sensor controls with offerings such as the SGH-E760 mobile phone and the YP-T8 MP3 player. It's certainly a step in the right direction, but on the YH-J70, the implementation is still a little raw, confined mainly to scrolling with less than impressive accuracy.

Though the screen is pretty brilliant, our cursory inspection found that the LCD display warps the aspect ratio of the test video clip, which gave us a bit of a headache after 15 minutes or so. The backlight also tends to wash out the colours in the video. We also feel the large amount of empty real estate on the bottom of screen could have been put to better use.

Outlook
For someone looking for an all-in-one MP3 player, the YH-J70 stands out for its feature range.

Had it for 3 years now. Still going.
That in itself means something in
    this age where everything breaks
two months after the warranty period's
    up

    • Good: Sturdy, stylish, does everything
    • Bad: Converting videos is inconvenient.

I got this mp3 player as a gift a couple years ago, and I honestly wished they weren't so nice. It's a pain in the a** using the software to rip CDs and add them onto the player, as you have to edit the information considerably to have the songs organized logically. Yeah, I could listen to music, and for that it was good...but I'm so happy it died and I have an excuse to go mp3 player hunting again.

    • Good: Nice colors, includes tetris in the games folder, and the radio was pretty good.
    • Bad: Crashes ALL THE TIME for no reason, and it takes several minutes to boot it back up, freezes constantly, runs very slow (and I barely used a 5th of the 30GB availability), and the navigation buttons freeze a lot. All around a pain in the a**.

one function i love besisdes the plethora of goodies is the atob function, i love to loop fav sections of a mp3 that cause the hairs to raise on my back
having sied that i returned myne back to argos after only 2 weeks as the lock slider came off from the side which amazed me.
i bought a creative zen m series but miss the a to b function and
you cant go wrong with this samsung product.
20gb storage where alot of greedy manufactures offer a fraction of this without fm radio never mind fm radio recording.
i do think samsung could have provided a carry pouch for the price.

    Sexy unit does everything!

I researched all MP3 players on the market (Dec 05) this player won hands down. It's sleek and sexy, very easy to use, long battery life. Can't praise it enough. Well done Samsung.

    VERY good player

I switched my 4G iPod for one of these (the 30GB, which unfortunately was only sold in white where I bought it) - and I'm really glad I did.

Sound quality isn't just slightly better, there's a massive rift of a difference, and the battery life is almost infallible (when not using the SRS WOW function at least - but even then it's iPod beating).

16:9 videos are stretched to 4:3, but 7 hours of playback treads all over the iPod's two - and is perfectly watchable despite the screen size, as the detail is kept (and an hour and a half of video becomes 170MB, which makes for plenty of video storage). There's just about every feature under the sun otherwise.

Unfortunately there's a few bugs in the firmware (lack of a proper shuffle function for one thing) and the supplied software isn't a patch on iTunes / Windows Media Player, but looking past those, this is an awesome piece of kit, which has drawn many an intrigued gaze from iPod owners. Highly recommended.

    M-azing

This is a great player. Samsung has done it again, and created an amazing player with a load of features.
