SanDisk Sansa e140 (1GB)

By Jasmine France on 02 June 2005

The SanDisk Sansa series will be the pick for those looking for an affordable WMA-friendly player packed with more features than the Apple iPod Shuffle, but if you want top-notch sound quality, stick with the latter.

User rating:8.9
  • Good: Lightweight • Supports DRM-protected WMA and Audible files • Built-in FM tuner and stopwatch • Decent navigational menus • Expansion slot
  • Bad: Poor scrollwheel (for navigation and volume control) • Mediocre sound quality • No playlist support
  • Specs: Flash • 1GB • No • Yes • See more specifications
  • RRP: AU$329.00
The Sansa e100 series ships in either 512MB (Sansa e130) or 1GB (Sansa e140) models and comes with a decent set of features.

At 70mm by 51mm by 13mm, the SanDisk Sansa e100 may not be the tiniest flash-based player (even some 5GB players are smaller), but it's very lightweight at 40 grams with its single AAA battery. Despite the e100's durability, its feathery weight lends to its cheap plastic feel -- glance at the buttons, and you'd think this was a promotional item.

Overall, the interface is intuitive, with its large, tactile main controller buttons, though they are not touch sensitive, despite appearances. The hold switch is on the left spine, while the right spine features the menu/power button, a handy expansion slot compatible with SD cards up to 2GB in capacity (conveniently available from SanDisk for about AU$250), and a dodgy scrollwheel. The original SanDisk MP3 player was more compact and pack-of-gum-like but lacked the expansion slot. The 512MB e130 (AU$229) comes in a sharp-looking blue, white, and silver body, while the 1GB e140 (AU$329) is silver and white.

The Sansa e100 plays MP3, protected WMA, and, handily, Audible files. The USB 2.0 device also has a stopwatch and an FM tuner with 20 autoscannable presets; however, it doesn't have a voice recorder, as the first SanDisk player did. While it lacks line-in and FM-recording capabilities, it has the most useful features (FM tuner, large LCD, and expansion slot) down pat. The interface, which sorts music by Play All, Artist, Album, Songs, New Music, Spoken Word, and other groupings, is simple to navigate, though the indigo-backlit LCD isn't the most legible we've used. Also, though the player breaks music into browsable groups, you can't listen to an album in order unless you append track names with numbers, and there is no playlist support.

One shortcoming of the design is the scrollwheel, which is located on the upper-right corner. It feels cheap and isn't smooth -- not good, since it also acts as the volume control; in fact, adjusting the e100's volume is a true pain. Plus, this wheel isn't clickable; instead, you tediously hit the main Enter button to select. There is also an occasional processor lag of a second or two during navigation or song selection.

Sound quality is not impressive at all, despite the five EQs and the SRS Wow effects. Our test MP3s (which include Ikara Colt's "Don't They Know" and Bjork's "Headphones") sounded a bit dull, with noticeable background hiss. Also, the player couldn't adequately power a larger set of headphones. The FM-tuner scanning works well, and reception is above average. You get comfortable in-ear phones and an armband in the package, along with a USB cable and a AAA battery. Transfer times over USB 2.0 were below average at 1.8MB per second. The battery life is decent at 17.6 hours per AAA battery, compared to the company's rating of 17 hours. If you're a discerning listener though, check out the Apple iPod Shuffle.

I bought this MP3 player a year ago, No problems with it, and i was completely happy with it, until the no text or even a logo would show up, but I could still listen to music. I called Sandisk and since my warranty just so happened to be going out the same day I called, they wouldn't replace it.
Overall its a good MP3 player thats not too expensive, but personally, I wont be buying another Sandisk product for a while. Talk about lack of customer service :(

    • Good: 60 bucks for the player!
      40 bucks for a 2GB SD card!
No BS software to load software!
Can easily upload and download songs from Player <--> PC! Unlike some other products!
      1 AAA battery for 17hrs!
      WOW is wow!
    • Bad: The little covers for the player can pop off easily, but they are safe in the case.

    3GB player for 100 bucks!

I would definitely recommend buying some rechargable NiHMs for this thing. I still get around 15-18 hours out of this thing.

I plugged in my pair of SuperBass headphones! Gotta love how this thing pumps!

BTW, I own a nano. Nano is just collecting dust!

    Sounds Great

I was dissapointed with the sounds quality initially after uploading a few songs to try it out. I thought the headphone might be the cause of the poor sounds quality and was planning to buy a new headphone. The problems I found were the TruBass setting was set at maximum. I reduce it and the distortion is gone. I also lower the SRS 3D and the Focus settings . Now the music sounds very clear and natural even when the volume is crank up very loud. I'll definitely reccomend you leave the WOW setting ON and the equalizer mode to Rock, (if you are into pop and rock music). The E140 sounds fantastic considering I had paid only CDN $69 , (US $62).

this thing would destroy an ipod in a fight....

if all you want is a simple music player and you have no interest in video this thing is the way to go.... I put a bunch of my music on it and just stick it on shuffle at work and it plays all day.....

    Great player

I am very pleased with it, sound quality is a bit poor but if tou turn the srs wow feature off and fiddle with the graphic equaliser, sound quality is much better although the headphone dont sit in your ears vey comfortably, they often fall out when i am walking

I like it. Replace the headphones though.

I purchased a Lexar LDP-200 with a 512 MB SD card on a Friday, returned it the next Monday because of poor quality sound and lack of features.
The Sandisk e140 is great but the headphones aren't. I use a pair in Sennheiser MX400 earbud headphones which improve the sound quality a lot.
I personally don't care for the SRS WOW effects but at least it's there for the people that do. The five band EQ is nice to have.
The player will not resume at the same location within a song but does resume at the beginning of the song that was playing when it was turned off. Resuming at the previos location within the track would be preferable especially for eBooks.
I use a 1 GB SD card and battery life seems good so far.
I paid $99.00 Canadian for the e140. A 1 GB iPOD Nano sells for $179.00 Canadian.

    Durable MP3

Love this little MP3 player. Dropped it in my hottub and didn't realize until a few minutes later. Was so distraught, I then smashed down the cover of the hottub over it. After retrieving, let it dry out for a day and it still plays the same as it did the first day I bought it. Great.

    Just say no to iCrap

This thing is great! It's cheap, has enough space, and totally expandable thanks to the SD Card expansion slot. If you need more space, you can just go grab an SD card and load that up. If you overload that, get another! Carry them around, they are the size of a stamp!! This also means you don't have to worry about failing Hard Drives(iPod) and switches song to song faster. You can also use those cards in your PDA and Digital Cam! Another good thing about this player is that it isn't an iPod of any sort. In other words, you won't be walking around looking like a cloned pod, except for the white ear buds it comes with which can be replaced. Some people like to be clones appearently, so at least you'll have the white headphones. You will also notice the earphones are better than the iPod's because they have a soft rubber that 9 out of 10 ears like better. I would suggest getting the similar version that Sony makes for better sound reproduction quality. It takes most audio formats and has the WOW audio feature which makes some genres of music sound better. Battery life isn't an issue because AAA batteries are so small, you could probably fit one in your wallet (George Costanza). I have used the player everyday for two weeks staight for about an hour+ a day and i'm still waiting for it to die to put a new AAA in. It's also a pretty attractive looking thing. One of the cons mentioned by the CNET review is the volume knob. I love it. It's better than hitting buttons back and forth to get the right volume or ajustment. It works just like an older analog control knob, but it's not analog. How much better than than can you get. You can hear your music my Year, Genre, Artist, Album or just random as long as all of your music is labeled correctly you should be fine. I say, why pay more for the same things unless you really want the name, then you should also buy coffee exclusively from Starbucks and be a clone.
