Cleverbot can have a conversation — of sorts — but can it write a narrative? One enterprising film-maker decided to investigate.

If you've ever had a play with Cleverbot, the online AI that learns conversational skills from its users, you know what a strange experience it is. It often starts strong, but the farther you go, the less coherent Cleverbot gets. This is because conversations between humans often start with concrete concepts, and, once those are established, become more abstract, since the participants remember the foundations laid in the beginning.

Cleverbot does not, instead only responding directly to the previous remark.

"Caperucita roja" means Little Red Riding Hood. Cleverbot wouldn't tell me. I had to Google it.

But if you were to ask Cleverbot a series of questions, would it remain focused? Could it construct a narrative?

Film-maker Chris Wilson sat down with Cleverbot to find out whether it could write a film.

"I tried to talk to Cleverbot just like I would with a human writing partner," he said. "I set up scenarios and Cleverbot provided all of the dialogue content for the scene."

The actual film is an abridged version of the conversation, since Cleverbot — as can be seen on the transcript — gets easily distracted. It also makes very little sense. In a very hilarious fashion.

If we had to lay odds, we'd have to say infinite monkeys would come up with the entire works of Shakespeare a lot more quickly than Cleverbot.

Without further ado, here is Do You Love Me, a film by Cleverbot and Chris Wilson.
