Slim TV round-up

By Ty Pendlebury on 02 November 2009

This year, the television race for supremacy changed. Where it was about bigger and brighter TVs before, it has now become slimmer and shinier.

Technology improvements such as LED edge lighting in LCD televisions has meant that flat screens are even flatter than ever. But it's not only LCDs but plasmas too, with both Samsung and Panasonic releasing one- and/or two-inch thick models this year.

Why slim? While it can make a nice talking point when attached to a stand, we think a really thin TV only makes sense if you’re going to stick it on a wall. While wall-mounting capability has been with us for a while, one of the things holding people back has been that the brackets have been unnecessarily cumbersome and hard to install. This year, Samsung unveiled its new mount which it likened to a picture frame — and it certainly doesn't resemble a piece of shipyard scrap metal.

As technology improves you can expect more TVs to feature slimmer depths, but for the moment we present you with a sample of what's available.

Panasonic Viera TH-P54Z1A

The Panasonic Viera TH-P54Z1A is an impressive-looking plasma that features a thickness of just one inch and full-1080p wireless.
