SlySoft CloneDVD Mobile

By Troy Dreier, CNET.com on 21 August 2006

SlySoft CloneDVD Mobile excels at copying and reformatting nonprotected DVD video for iPod use, although it can't touch commercial discs.

7.0 8.4
  • Good: Copies DVDs in the right format for the video iPod and several other portable devices • Creates high-resolution, highly compressed files
  • Bad: No Mac version • Can't copy protected DVDs • Some of the controls are difficult at first
  • RRP: TBA

So now that you have a video iPod, how do you load videos on it? There's the iTunes Music Store and Google Video, but what about content from DVDs you already own? SlySoft's CloneDVD Mobile offers an easy way to create compressed videos that play on the iPod, the Sony PSP, and other portable devices. The downside -- and it's a big one -- is that it doesn't work with copy-protected DVDs.

CloneDVD Mobile sells for a steep US$39, although there's a generous 21-day trial, so you can make sure that you can't live without it before you put up your money. The interface is clearly laid out and walks you through the few necessary steps. You select your device, choose your DVD, and tell the program where to save the results.

In CloneDVD Mobile's opening screen, you select where you'll be loading the finished video so that the app can put it in the correct format.

The interface has a few confusing gotchas the first time you use it. The first time, it didn't detect our test DVD automatically; we had to tell it to look in the E: drive. The pull-down menu didn't even list E: as an option, so we had to type it in. Once we did, though, it was able to see the loaded DVD for that and all future sessions.

The Save options are also a bit confusing. At first, it looks as if you only need to type in the name of the file you're saving, but you actually need to press the Browse button next to the text field to first decide where you want it saved. After you've run the program once, the text field is automatically filled in with the last saved location.

Once it's working, CloneDVD Mobile is a fast performer and makes attractively small files with good resolution. We wish it could copy commercial DVDs, but Hollywood isn't about to let that happen.

This review was written a year ago. The current version of Clone DVD Mobile does work for commercial DVDs and does a wonderful job. It works consistently about 90% of the time but when it works it really works. The 10% I refer to are the DVDs that are so encrypted that nothing works.

When formatting movies for the IPOD Touch Slysoft doesn't tell you that you are formatting files in both the MP4 and H264 formats (for IPHONE); this takes twice as long and uses twice the disk space.

    • Good: Does an excellent job with most DVDs.
Responsive technical support (but they don't always follow through)
      Well worth the outlay
    • Bad: Documentation that exists is minimal
Files in IPOD Touch format take a very long time

I have used this software before and it does do what it says, however I believe if free software so I found other programs that also do this but at no cost - just a little time to learn how to use them

    • Good: does what it says
    • Bad: cost $$$$

I've used anydvd and clonedvd before, and I've been using this one for about a month. In conjunction with anydvd, I put 32 movies out of my collection onto my brand new iPod, and I still have over 55 gigs left on it. That just shows how small the files really are. They're better quality than the itunes store, and they're only half the size. If that's not quality I don't know what is.

    • Good: Great conversions - small files = more memory on whatever the movies are going on, after the first few uses it's super easy, cheap compared to some of the fake crap out there, free updates for life once you buy it.
    • Bad: Like others have said - it's only useful when you use anydvd with it, Other than that the program does it's job perfectly.

You can backup owned DVD'S with copyright protection

Despite this review indicating that you cant backup protected DVD's, you can backup protected DVD's with this application as long as its used with AnyDVD plugin for this to be done. AnyDVD is made by the same company as this application.

Here is the info directly from SlySoft "Copying a DVD to your mobile video machine is achieved in a few mouse clicks and without the need to rip it to your hard-disk. Note that copying protected DVDs also requires AnyDVD."

    • Good: You can backup owned DVD's with copyright protection as long as you use the additional AnyDVD plugin with this application.
