Contest co-sponsored by Nvidia and the Society of Digital Artists yields arresting, other-worldly creations. Think liquid sculptures and slinking wicker leopards.
Graphics chipmaker Nvidia and the Society of Digital Artists on Monday announced the winners of the NVArt digital art challenge, the first in a series of global contests scheduled for 2008. The theme of the inaugural challenge was "Amazing Creations," with artists invited to submit computer-generated images that could only exist in the imaginary realm (think liquid sculptures and knotted freeways). Contest sponsors stressed that they wanted artistically and technically outstanding images, but no fantasy creatures and game characters, as "these are too common in both digital and traditional fantasy art."
Indeed, contestants mined the deepest recesses of their imaginations to create unexpected, and often stunning, works. For this vivid image, titled "Growth of Cubic Bacteria," Vaclav Pajkrt -- who works as a graphic designer in advertising in the Czech Republic -- won first place, plus an Nvidia high-end Quadro FX 5500 PCIE graphics chip; a US$10,000 vacation package to the San Francisco Bay Area; and a meeting with Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang. Pajkrt said he wanted to create a form that "looked like a photograph of a small structure of a microorganism."
