Brett Keyes, a 3D generalist in Vancouver, Canada, grabbed second place for "Corner Fire." "I've always been inspired by the complexity found in nature and often try to re-create some of that complexity in my work," Keyes told CNET.com.au sister site News.com in an e-mail. "'Corner Fire' was an attempt to mimic the way blowing snow particles attach to each other and form into structures." He said the geometry for the piece was derived from scripts that use Autodesk Maya software to capture the snow's motion as it takes place in nature.
Contest judges included representatives of Dreamworks, Ubisoft, Oddworld Inhabitants, Midway Games, and co-sponsor Nvidia. "Nvidia has always been inspired by the incredible creativity of 3D artists and content creators," Nvidia CEO Huang said during a Friday reception honoring the winners. "NVArt is our way of celebrating and recognising their creativity."
Winning submissions will be displayed at the San Jose Museum of Art in Silicon Valley through February 8.
